now i know what the gold rush all about... the guide was very friendly and infomative and shared with everyone how gold rush came, gold nugget were found and best part is the gold pour witnessing 6kg worth of molten gold melting into a bar which was said to be worth approx 300k aud....pleasant trip!
When we arrived a tour was starting in 10 minutes, so we paid the $19 per person. Our guide was very informative and provided a broad history of the gold rush era. The highlight was the gold pour definitely worth a visit if you love precious metals. You can walk around the grounds large shop for free.
This was my 3rd trip to the Perth Mint. Every time I come here I find something else interesting that I had missed seeing the first time. If only I could have lifted that bar of gold!
I loved seeing the million dollar gold coin! Also liked the demonstration on pouring gold into a mold to make a gold bar.
The Perth Mint is housed in an historic building in the inner city of Perth. It was built to handle the gold from the booming Western Australian Goldfields at the end of the 19th Century. In the mint one can view the pouring of pure gold and see how special coins are designed. There are also displays of coins, jewellery and gold.
The tour, though relatively expensive for what it offers, was both interesting and informative. Our guide was passionate about the history of the mint as well as the current activities. The most interesting part was seeing how they previously cast the bars at the mint as they gave a demonstration. It was also interesting to learn about some of the great gold finds of previous days. Also managed to find out my weight in gold! The gift shop was a bit of a let down as they only accept cash (though I had been told otherwise by staff) for bullion (though you can do a wire transfer though that is risky if only in town for a short stint and the staff may not be the most able to handle that task). Moreover, they had some perverse logic (and actually I had to correct the same) in regards to the fact that they would not make sales over the weekend (as the market is closed and they are worried about arbitrageurs for actually no real reason). Can to some degree understand why card would not be usable (note: they do take debit cards if you're from Aussie that are from an Aussie bank), but offering to pay a premium or establishing a premium, would make sense for those like me who wandered in under false pretenses/understandings. The rest of the goods in the store are possible to be paid via credit card that being said (as the mark-ups are crazy I presume they do not care). Overall, would definitely go the mint when in Perth, but do note that one should not try to buy over the weekend if that's the only time they can come or via a credit card (which is not unlike most gold retailers I must confess). The food facilities after did look quaint.
The Perth Mind was not on my "to do list", however when passing one morning in Perth I decided to head inside and take part in a guided tour. Boy, am I glad I did!I found the tour absolutely fascinating and this was further enhanced and brought to life by the excellent tour guide who had a wealth of information on the history of Western Australia and a great typically Australia, sense of humor.Thank you for a fantastic experience, the Perth Mint!
We really enjoyed our morning at the Mint. We didn't book just turned up at 9 o'clock and bought a ticket for a tour. The tour was very interesting and included seeing the world's largest coin and a gold bar being made. The café had delicious cakes that could be eaten in a courtyard. We loved the opportunity the tour gave us to personalise a coin with a message and picture engraved on one side of the coin. I would recommend this half day trip.
This was one of the most interesting and informative things we did in Perth, well worth a visit and now we also know what our body weight is worth in $$$!!
The guide was awesomely humorous. Great way to learn about gold, mining, coin production, and history of gold. Nice experience for those who haven't seen or touch gold bars.Coin engraving is awesome for souvenirs. Got one engraved with my daughter's name on it.Fantastic experience.
