Easy to walk thru and look at all sorts of indigenous woven articles of clothing. Took less than 45 minutes.
This museum is located on the University grounds, along with two other museums so you get to see all three. We made a day of it and visited them all, had lunch on the grounds (Burger King - the only restaurant there) and walked around the grounds. Very educational and beautiful.
This museum is worth a visit when you are in the neighbourhood. It is next to the popul vuh museum, that is in my opinion less attractive. But you have to visit the two museums and then go to the city center for a good lunch.
This is a beautiful, varied museum on the campus of the Universidad Francisco Marroquín. Next visit To Guatemala, consider spending a day in Guatemala City in order to take in this museum, neighboring Popol Vuh archaeological museum, and the historical center of the city.
This is an excellent collection! I highly recommend it. Be sure to check out the other 2 museums in the area as well as the University. It is a great area to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and walk around.
The wonderful variety of colorful clothing and head gear of the traditional Mayan people is a great part of the Guatemala experience. Museo Ixchel gives an in-depth history and background of the Mayan clothing and textile traditions that added greatly to our Guatemala stay. It's a new museum, well kept up and with lots of signage in English as well as three documentaries in either English or Spanish.
We had planned to stay an extra two days in Guatemala City so we could visit this museum and the Popol Vuh. The website said it was only closed December 31st and January 1st. However, when we arrived in our taxi, the entire campus was closed off and both the museums were closed until January 5. There are lots of tourists in Guatemala City right now for the holidays. This is not a very good way to treat them.
A very well categorized display of Mayan Textiles form antiquity to present. Nice souvenir shop of quality goods
Definitely worth while visiting. We have been on numerous occasions. With friends and family. The place is just breathtaking. Be sure when you purchase your entrance that they explain all. That means that you could purchase a ticket to one, two or tree sites. Most of the time they won’t tell you that at the entrance, then when you finish your fist visit they will let you know and of course here is where the trick comes. Then you will have to pay more to visit the other sites. Be aware of that. Ask for a pass to see all the sites. Otherwise you will have to pay individually for each place you want to visit. This is a place that can easily take you 2 hours to visit. So dedicate time for this visit. If you are on your own or with friends without any transportation, getting here could be tricky. Walking from Avenida la Reforma to this place is Dangerous. So keep an eye. Not only on muggers, but also on tricky policeman.
If you love or work with fashion you must come to this place! One of the best textiles/fashion museums in the world, for sure! The facilities were the best that I remember seeing in a museum in Central America. The only "bad" thing is that you can't take pictures.
