I just finished the Flor de Cana Tour, it cost me 20 dollars and I can tell you : "It is not Worthy". The tour last about p2 1/2 hours is very limited and they don't show you the entire process. The show you a warehouse, barrel assembly facility, a little movie, museum, store and the family reserved warehouse. They forgot the rest: bottling plant, etc. They also start with sampling a 18 year old rum and at the ended they give you a 7 year old rum for tasting. In all the other liquor facilities that I have visited, they usually start you up with a lower end liquor and they work you way to the high end liquor. Another think to inform you is that the tour infrastructure facilities is decaying..... You can see it though out the entire tour.
Interesting fact: Flor de Cana rum is aged in used Jack Daniels oak barrels. You'll learn this and lots of other interesting facts on this delightful tour. I showed up with two friends and no reservations, but the friendly folks at Flor de Cana were obliging and hospitable, including a generous tasting of the goods. If you're visiting southern Nicaragua, as most people seem to do, this is definitely worth the drive to the north, about 20 miles beyond Leon. There's lots of cool stuff and very pretty girls in the gift shop at tour's end, too. And the rum -- epecially the 12-year-old, is heavenly.
Good to see if you are already in town. Especially if you like Rum.Glad to see some industry down there.
If you like rum and are visiting Nicaragua then go visit the flor de caña distillery. It was well worth the 3 hour ride from Granada. We arranged the tour with Jose (Joe) Lopez. He works out of the Alhambra in Granada. It does make for a long day though. So I recommend spending the night in Leon to break up the trip. They do charge for the visit and are very prompt about times. So don't show up late. And there is a fine gift shop at the end of the tour to spent a few cordobas.
Wow! This tour made me pround of being Nicaragüense . They show you the story . I love that you can try it. They also have a store with nice and cool souvenirs, bottles of Flor de caña and even clothing. Its a must stop if you go to Nicaragua. Highly recomended.
I was recommended by friends to take this tour and it did not dissapoint. I was 5 minutes late and was almost not let in the 2PM tour (I got there at 2:05PM!!) but I still managed to talk my way in and joined the group that was just starting.I did not know a lot of things about Rum, like the aging process, or the way alcohol is fermented, bottled, aged, etc. However the tour guide really knew his stuff, and was a really fun guy. We went to a movie that showed us the story of how the family formed the company, and how they ended up having the largest Rum Reserve in the world. We also were taught on how to try if it is a good rum by many tasting techniques while we were at a previously-unavailable-to-the-public owners-family-only location, plus other details I will not share to not spoil the tour for readers. Overall I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Nicaragua!
I was with a group of 20 anglers and was not really lookingforeword to the rum tour. I was pleasantly surprised and reallyenjoyed it and would go back again anytime....We sampled manyrums from 7 years to 25 years and was educated on whyFlor de Cana is probably the best rum in the world. I highlyrecommend this tour.
My friend and I went on the tour here and had a great time. The tour guide was funny and we were impressed with his English. We had a fairly small group and it was easy to see everything and get around. At a certain point, they take you into an area previously only open to the family who owns the company, and allow you to taste the 26 year aged rum. They have you pour it into your hands and rub your hands together. I was surprised that it didn't leave any sticky residue at all. We learned a ton about the rum making process and only wanted to drink Flor de Cana during the rest of our trip. It's a fun way to spend the afternoon if you've got a few hours.
I drove from managua to Chichigalpa, left at 6 am and arrived at 8:15 am.The schedule of the tour, is at 9am and 11am, they have tours in the afternoon also.Residents pay 6$, The tour lasts an hour and a half. During the tour there is a rum tasting. They serve you a glass of Centenario 12 years, one of the best rum of the brand. The photos are prohibited in some parts of the tour.At the end you visit the museum, It's a giant barrel structure, they said, The world's largest barrel. There You can buy souvenirs, clothing and accessories, all with the brand Flor de Caña.
If you are going to purchase rum the prices are cheaper at the airport. I was told that and it was true, a few sales going on at the airport.
I and my three favourite rum aficionados enjoyed a Sunday afternoon tour at Flor de Caña.The tour was well paced (you won’t be bored); I found it bordering on rushed. One of the problems was that the tour was given in both Spanish and English so all the information was delivered twice quickly. One language, delivered more slowly would have been better. Also, the 18-year tasting session felt a bit rushed – we didn’t get to finish that lovely rum – perhaps this was because half the tourists in the group were kids who couldn’t participate in the tasting. I particularly liked the museum and could have spent twice as long as allowed there. Details:I believe you do have to book in advance. I heard about someone getting turned away without a reservation. You can reserve through the Flor de Caña website. However, we booked our tour the day before through the Flor de Caña Boutique on the eastern outskirts of Chinandega. We didn’t pay when we reserved, but paid at the Flor de Caña site. The cost was $20 per adult (less if you are Nicaraguan, then it is less). We were told we needed to arrive at 1:30 pm for the 2:00 pm tour. We arrived around 1:50 pm, and it was fine, though maybe if the tour had had more people, we would have needed to arrive earlier. The location in Chichigalpa was easy to find with google maps or WAZE. It is on the left hand side as you drive south towards Chichigalpa. We had two opportunities to taste during the tour – once, the 18-year, and then at the end we got free samples of the 7-year. Also, at the second tasting bar, we were able to buy tastes of the other rums. We tried the 25-year; not inexpensive, even for a single shot; but a fun opportunity to try a delicious old rum.
We participated in a tour organized by Tierra Tours, but if you have your own vehicle you can go directly to the Factory and save $15 per person. This is a good option for those who don´t do sand boarding or hiking and looking for other different options near Leon. You learn how slow aged rum is made, it is very interesting. You can taste real rum, and at the end of the tour everybody is happy. At the museum shop you can buy bottled rum and other rare items not sold in the market. Highly recommended.
