20 min of your time to see some amazing altars. Even if not for religious experience the historical significance is worth this stop.

It was wide open we walked in to light candles but they had these new wire up candles I put my money in but it didn't light up...could see why the priest painted it black so captain Morgan could not take it...what a great idea...

Very details and amazing to see it. Also they can keep it for so long without any damages. Amazing. Thanks to our guide, Rudy, we know the history behind it. You definitely need a tour guide or read it before you go.

My tour group visited this church for about 30 minutes. The views were spectacular. The golden alter is an amazing tribute to God. The architecture is something special. We were able to walk around and take pictures without disturbing the parishioners who were very nice as well as understanding that we were touring the establishment.

I have seen a lot of old churches, but I cannot remember that I have ever been so impressed by an alter as I have by this one, - gold everywhere. It was a big surprise because it was hard to see from outside that the Church was going to be so impressive inside!

This beautiful church has the most ornate alter-piece entirely made of gold. A walk through any old church is always a delight, and this one is beautiful. Welcoming and reverent.

This church is located right in a rather narrow, dilapidated street in Viejo Panama (Old Panama) city. It is in a residential area near Plaza Herrera on Calle 8/9 Avenida A. Upon entering the Church, it is dark but the sight of the famous golden altarpiece is located right in the center of the church. It was saved from being stolen when Old Panama City was ranshacked. It was Henry Morgan who painted it black to trick the thieves. There are stain glass designs on the sides of the church that are worth the view. Nice place to see such a unique piece of gold. Mind your belongings as there was a beggar at the church entrance who was asking for contributions.

This old church for its history and beautiful sculptures and art. The church itself is rather non-descript inside and out. But, I guess that helps these details shine.

Well my family and I had a very interesting experience here. Like most people, the church was closed and locked when we went by the first two times. However, we were lucky because there was a baptism later that day that allowed us a glimpse of the alter. (Even longer story :)We were rushed through the church but I was able to get about five pictures before exiting. From the exterior, the church blends in with the rest of the old town and is in need of restoration. The inside was dark and unassuming EXCEPT the alter. When my father-in-law asked him how they protected this massive piece of gold, the tour guide stunned us with his answer. He told us that the "real" golden alter was elsewhere in the city (National Cathedral) and no longer kept at that church. Unfortunately, we were already headed back to our hotel and not able to go back to the National Cathedral. We also learned that this is not a solid piece of gold but a carving covered in gold flake. However, the replica is truly a site to see (as I imagine the real work to be also). However, if you are in the old town and are lucky enough to get into the San Jose, make sure you peak in to see the golden alter. Learning about Captain Morgan and the stories of how they protected (and actually tricked Henry Morgan in giving them a donation) are enough to fill your lunch (and dinner) conversations for many days.CAUTION: Like many reviewers previously, this church is difficult to see. There are no posted hours, few workers/ministers, and many frustrated people that come and go from this church. I write this so that if you are in the old town and see the doors open, RUN over and get your pics ASAP as the door will most likely not be opened when you return!

This church is located in a narrow street of Casco Viejo, a must visit neighborhood. The facade is very simple and old but pretty. The interiors are more spectacular, it has a golden altar. It is made of carved wood and it's covered in gold flakeTake a quick look if you are visiting this area.

The church opened ~10am. Very simple on the outside, and definitely worth a look on the inside! Quite clever, they were, to paint it black and hide it's sparkle. If you're in Old Panama City this is definitely worth a stop.

The outside does not look like much but head on in. Take a look just to appreciate beauty. Be respectful as this church is operational.

while in the old city we stopped in at San Jose church! It is remarkable how this GOLD alter was saved and rebuilt!

It is a very important part of our history...yes...I am from Panama. This church hosts a golden altar you will get very good pictures and a story to tell your friends.

The church doesn't look anything grand from outside, but once you get inside, you are just marveled by the huge gold altar- beautiful, intricately carved, and extraordinary. It was raining very heavily the day we went, but we are so glad we could see it.
