The visitor center is interesting with a good museum and a great view of the locks - go in the morning or later in the afternoon, otherwise, you might not see a ship passing through the locks. They do not run continuously throughout the day I was told. We saw a Panamax ship - the largest that can navigate the locks - it was quite the site. The dining areas were all closed while we were there and the only food options were the vending machines, so be prepared. The 10 minute movie runs in both English and Spanish and is ok - a bit patriotic, but informative nonetheless. Worth a trip, especially if your time is limited.

The visitors center has a nice introductory film and museum. However, the highlight is the ability to watch as ships enter the locks and the locks work as designed to move the ships from one coast to the other.

$15 admission is steep for what you get. The Gutan Locks charge $5 and they are far less crowded and much closer to the canal action. You can almost touch the ships passing through the canal from the Gutan Locks, where as at Miraflores, its like being in the nose bleed section at a hockey game.

This is just a 20-25 minute drive from downtown Panama City. The Center is well-organized and visitor traffic flows smoothly. It has a commanding view of the Miraflores Locks where ships enter from the Pacific as they start the journey through the Canal to the Atlantic. Elevator to the 4th floor for a command, scenic view of the Locks and witness the gargantuan, and not so gargantuan ship start their transit of the Canal. Enjoy also a great 12 minute 3D movie about the Canal, and tour the 3 level Museum. It will astound. Shop for souvenirs in the small shop and take home memento's of your experience. Highly recommend. Tip: take a taxi (not a tour bus/company that will squeeze your wallet dry) with a cost of about $30 roundtrip (vs $110 r/t for two people!) Then pay just $15/adult and $8/child to enter. A inexpensive tour you can do yourself, along with a friendly yellow taxi driver who will wait while you spend an hour, or two, at the Center. Lots of fun for all, especially the kids.

We had a friend that told us the ships would be coming through starting at 8:30 so we came early, only to discover that the viewing doesn't open until 9:00. Within the last few minutes before 9:00 large crowds showed up, mostly locals. Overall a nice view from the observation deck but expensive (for a non Panamanian) and crowded. A bit grating to be 3 deep behind others, all of whom get in for a fraction of what you are required to pay. I didn't expect too much from the museum but it was really quite nice, about an hours interesting views and history of the canal. The history interesting if not 100% accurate, noted that among the many nationalities who worked on the canal the Chinese are conspicuously absent in the museum piece. The restaurant was closed in January when we were there.

take the time to visit the museum inside the center. our Caravan tour guide really highly recommended this in addition to watching a ship in the chambers and locks, Sorry to see so much empty retail space but hopefully the upbeat economy will change this.

If you are in Panama you must visit this center. Great 3 D film, museum and opportunity to see ships pass through the canal. Very well run.

This is an ideal place to see the Panama Canal if on a quick visit to Panama. It is a short taxi drive away from the city centre. It is best to get there in the morning because that is when you are likely to see a lot of ships transitting but unfortunately most visitors turn up at this time.An elevator will take you up to the top floor from where you can see the ships and the operation of the locks.Downstairs there is an air-conditioned auditorium which screens a 3D documentary about the canal. There is also a lot of information, a museum, free leaflets, a souvenir shop and a restaurant. If you are in Panama City this is a must-visit site!

Truly a marvelous man made creation that you must see , someone else's words cannot truly make you realize the spectacular invention and how the world depends on on it.

The visit to the locks was part of a Road Scholar tour. The history and development of the locks is clearly displayed in Spanish and English on four floors of display area. The view from the observation deck is wonderful. Ships seem only yards away as they pass through the two locks. It seems as if there are only a few feet to spare when some ships enter. Watching the mules guide the ships through finally makes clear what I read about before I went on the trip. The movie is in 3D and gives a brief history of the canal building project. All should see this part of the locks tour.
