Enjoyed the boat ride. Best for travel lovers. Floating Restaurant, Boat House are too good. Best places to visit in kerala.
this island is an amazingly serene and non-commercial place. the sea is pristine with the back-waters adjoining with a small land mass inbetween. The boat ride through the back-waters was exhilarating. worth visiting!
We went there at noon - it was 1st March 2015 - quite a hot day. We told our taxi driver that we want to go for a boat ride and he took us to a boat club - The boat trip was privately operated and somewhat costly- Rs 3500 for 1.5 hours for 2 persons - but the trip worth every penny. I must say the journey was quite comfortable in a big spacious , extremely clean boat. There were so many birds even at that odd hour - eagle, gull, kingfisher, flycatchers, water-crow etc. And finally the golden beach - what a beauty! To me it looked like a golden necklace on a blue mermaid. One could look at the sea-green clear waves for hours without getting bored. The boatman was quite helpful - he helped in spotting many birds. At some places the Neyyar river was quite narrow and the journey through the dense growth on the sides reminded us of the movie "Anaconda". To add to our thrill, We spotted a big snake, though dead, in the river. With the mid-day sunlight on the dancing coconut leaves of different shades of green, the entire landscape was turned into a huge painting, repainted every moment by God's own hand. We loved the trip. The calm journey gave us a sense of eternity - We wish we could spent more time there!
Visited this place in early march and the kerala summer was at its best. There are many cruise companies, that offer packages that take you through the backwaters. A typical backwater trip spans for a good 60 minutes. You've floating restaurants serving fresh sea food and a lot of other refreshments on the way.You can do a bit of negotiation with the cruise guys in case you're a big group. We were just 3, and couldn't negotiate. We were charged around Rs 3000 for an hour's cruise. Yes, it was overpriced, but it was worth it.Don't forget to take your zoom lens along, you can spot so many beautiful birds on the way.Go for it!
Believe me, boat ride here this is better and less commercialized compared to Alleppey backwaters. We took a boat rode for 2 hours, we were taken through narrow canals between dense trees. We saw many bird species like Krishna eagle, gulls, kingfisher, water crow etc. The backwater finally leads to the Golden Sand Beach which is a clean beach with very rough water and high tides (no playing in the water out here). You should take the ride during sunrise OR sunset, in the morning you will see more varieties of birds and during sunset, the view is great on the beach.
One of the excellent back waters place in kerala and great place to be in Boat rides are very expensive and you need to bargain atleast 30-50% -No proper safety measures The beach usually turn rough in as day progress and plan accordingly for the travel Great relaxation and can be good weekend place to visit when you visit from trivandrum Visited with the family
An excellent place for holidays in Kerala and the place is less than hour drive from Trivandrum city. One will find excellent hospitality and care at a reasonable price.
The first thing you will find once you reach near this region is some bike driver following your car and ask for a backwater boat ride. Then he will take you to the actual site. The rates of backwater ride are not regularised and they will tell more charge. Then you will have to bargain. They charge 2000 Rs. for a couple for only 1 hour ride. The one very disgusting thing was that they kept us waiting for 1 hour and they were almost about to give preference to a foreigner group who had just arrived. Then we had asked for a refund of money so they allowed us to board the boat. As the name suggest, it was a POOR (POOVAR minus VA) experience.
Of all the beaches that I have visited till date..This has been the best so far. Its a meeting point of sea, lake and backwaters. The water is Crystal clear with incredible tides and a place worth watching the sun rises and the sun sets.
Poovar Island is a beautiful place around 15-20 kms south of Trivandrum. A must see for anyone who is traveling to this city.A boat ride for 2 hours should cost you Rs. 1000 and you should be able to enjoy the backwaters which has an interesting vegetation and a few rare birds in the area. There are floating restaurants as well, however the food served was average. You can contact Hussein at 9995436462 / 9645003914 for the boat ride if you don't wish to get cheated by other operators in the area. The pick up point is the check post from where he can guide you to the place where the ride starts.Poovar Island Resorts is a recommended place as the cottages (around 4-6 in number) are long the lake and gives you a feeling of staying within the waters. They should cost around 8-10K for a night.
A must see place for anyone travelling to Kovalam. Poovar is having its own unique scenic beauty and very much different from any other backwater or beach tour. The Poovar boat ride covers an interesting mangrove forest, a big lake and a wonderful golden sand beach. If possible spend one day at poovar (there are many upcoming resorts in reasonable cost); enjoy bathing in the stunning beach, have lunch in the floating restaurant and then take a relaxed boat ride before the sunset. Regarding the boat trip I would recommend “King Fisher Backwater”. Many other boat companies pay heavy commission to the taxi drivers, which is indirectly comes from the customers pocket only. So directly call up Mr. Hussain Abdullah(9995436462, 9645003914) and book your ride. He is a gentleman and will definitely provide you the best rate at Poovar.
Had an amazing backwater trip of @ hours. Too scenic. Floating restaurant is a nice concept which one get to experience, if house boat is skipped....Final destination at Golden Sand beach fills your heart with joy :)
This island is far away from the rush and crowd. A beautiful place with a majestic building. One can access this hotel either by a boat or by a road that was a bit lousy when I visited. The food is superb and children will enjoy the place. It does include the elders who can be children.
Great boat trip stopping to photograph the wild birds on the way. Well worth the money. Landed on the beach and paddled in the sea. No time to swim as the boat is only for a set time.
Went to poovar whilst staying in Trivandrum, went with my two small children.the tour was 2 hrs long which everyone enjoyed the nice backwaters, and beach location which was a bonus, good for holiday snaps.would recommend if in the area.
