This guy is a sweet talker. We searched for this place like hell and got there. he shooed us away as he already had the prey for the day: two lovely foreign ladies waiting to be conned into buying his "so called authentic paintings".
First impression :A clear area, seems like a showroom except there is a long desk with tools.Reception :Vijay was very concerned about the photographs we were taking in Jodhpur and the technics. He also compared with his painting technics. Vijay explained us all the history about the Rajahstani paintings and the theorical approach. The art :Vijay's performance is very impressive. For once, I spent two weeks in Jodhpur, instead of the only two days of most of people. And I learnt a lot about anyone ! Sometime fake paintings are sold, some have drawers chainworking... But the ethic of this school is far away. And it is certified that at the heritage art school you will find someone that will always be able to tell you any pic's origin and reproduce them by himself for the best price. (High quality results)The man :Nice teacher. Very patient and happy when people improve. His lines are enough thin and perfect to motivate the pupil !Vijay is smart, can speak about all subjects, is generous and friendly. Conclusion :Come stay a week in Jodhpur, learn from him. And when you will see how much he has given to you, even by buying his most valuable painting, you cannot give back !But this is the place in the area to buy authentic paintings.
We found Vijay interesting and came away with a painted lentil which he dedicated to my wife who could not make the trip. However, we made the mistake of buying 3 small elephant paintings as a gift for her. As a travel professional I was promised a good price and did not bargain hard. I paid INR 600 for the 3.Our hotel manager told me this was a scam and to check in Udaipur where the paintings are done.We are now in Udaipur and the same paintings are sold at a fixed price of INR 50 each!!I do not believe Vijay's claim that 30% of what we paid will go to the school and 70% to the artist. Our money has gone into his pocket.A real CON ARTIST at work
Lovely place, extraordinary paintings, great service! If you want to paint your self, you can take a course for a week or two.
The most heart warming experience during my stay in Jodhpur. I went to participate in Vije's art class, he devoted all his attention to my art work and also made sure that his students take care about my dad. He was so helpful and kind. And the way he spoke about his family was amazing. Thank you so much!
Must Visit this place will pull you towards it, its very nice place to visit... but only 20% Area is opened for visit but you will love it must go, see vintage cars also
If you want to try your hand at miniature painting, why not try? Yes, they are just trying to get your money but they are kind and willing to show you alot about the painting style!
Despite the messiness of the city traffic are bordering my trip, but i had a great time in Umaid Heritage Art School. The Owner Vijay is a good and patient man. The session that we had not only teaching me how to do drawing but also come with a beautiful lunch treat. I really felt great and thankful for having my 3 hours spent in the school. * Have a good life Vijay!
Vijay is an extraordinary person, a very good artist. He can teach you to paint miniatures and then you can speak with him of a lot of things. A very smart man :) in The shop you can find beautiful miniatures, a lot of them are cheap (but they have artistic value). You can do nice gift to your friends. The school is free for everyone!
I had read the reviews on trip advisor and love art. The place is tricky to find, but my hotelier walked me there. The instructor was very kind and calm and was not the usual busy-busy, Hassel filled shop keeper I was used to. The owner has a great back story about why he became an artist, and he seemed very genuine. He was patient in showing me the technique and made a really cool painting on a rice grain. I am a single female traveler and I felt very comfortable. At the end, there was no pressure to buy, but I bought some artwork anyways because I genuinely wanted to. You should stop by if you have any interest in local art.
Vj is a great teacher- he taught us the basics of Rajasthani miniature painting! We painted, chatted, ate lunch together and drank chai! Altogether a lovely way to spend the afternoon! I would recommend it to anyone- not only arty people!
Deservedly one of Jodhpur's top attractions! Beautiful handmade artworks for sale , and the best thing is FREE classes for all where you'll genuinely surprise yourself and under Vijay's tutelage create a pretty good miniature painting in a couple of hours even if you've not painted since primary school like me! I first came here a couple of years ago and now have friends for life in Vijay and Gaurav :)
I haven't been able to find this on TripAdvisor until now, so a belated report. We visited this Art School last year and were very impressed by the project. It is run by Vijay to encourage and support local people, resulting in the most incredible artworks. They are taught the skills they need to produce work of a very high standard and their work is then exhibited for sale. The profit goes to the artist with a small amount going back into the project. This enables people not only to discover their latent talent and thereby improving their self esteem, but also to support their families. It is located in a market place in the backstreets near the fort and is well worth a visit. We just visited to support this project, but many people (even celebrities) visit and undertake an art course. Highly recommended.
Umaid was the perfect escape from the rather hectic streets of Jodhpur! I had never painted before in my life and with the help of Vijay (and three cups of chai!) I produced a pretty amazing peacock. His patience and beautiful heart was perfect company for a delightful afternoon. The shop is also just incredible and you will leave with a priceless experience and unique painting. So please show him a visit!
Its located quite close to the clock tower in the narrow lanes in the market. The work done by the students is amazing. The talent is evident in all the artwork at display and sale at the school. One can even try their hand at it.
