Lake Kasshuro was one of the best highlights of our visit in autumn Oct 2014. The autumn beauty of the lake and the changing colours of its surrounding forest was really a visual treat. The place was practically empty! Though it was raining, we still went ahead with hiking in the surrounding forests and hills. It was one exhilarating hike!
When your tour vehicle pulls up at this venue, you instinctively know you come to a special place. Central to this lake attraction are the famous resident whooper swans (think they pronounce it as 'hoopers'). You can buy food to feed the swans and take pictures of them, among them and possibly with them. But don't alarm them though :)The lake is very windy and during winter season, exceptionally cold. So do standby your ears mittens and heat pads when you are there. Pictures of the swans will make any photo albums just that more special :)
Sand Onsen was great and interesting as the water of the lake is cold and the sand onsen next to it is hot.
If you want to get photographs of whooper swans, this is the place! It is very cold so be prepared, but their is a convenience store/gift shop on the premises with a bathroom. I, personally tried to always use the beautiful restroom next to the parking lot. There is also a restaurant in the convenience store (which I did not eat at, so I cannot reply as to the quality).
Had a fun time at the lake, as there were dozens of whoppers swans swimming near the shore. They even went on land. The swans do not seem to be afraid of human interaction, and everyone around us were snapping pictures of/ and with the swans.
Large lake - there's a nice walk on the wakato peninsula, lots of free rotemburos but they are mixed so you cant be shy! just nice to eat and drink in the lakeside cafes and browse the ainu craft shops
The largest of the three lakes in Akan National Park. We didn't stay near this lake so we chose 2 spots to stop by:-(1) The Sand Hot Spring on the east where we had so much fun. In early June, the lake water was still very cold. However, once you dig the sand, hot water surfaces. Pretty amazing phenomenon and feeling. So freezing water and hot water were merely 3 inches apart as illustrated. Tip
My family and I joined a guided tour around Hokkaido, and during our tour of the Akan National Park area, we stopped by Lake Kussharo for a salmon hotpot lunch. The lunch venue was by the lake itself, and it had this onsen which supplies drinkable water, which is apparently quite rare in Japan. I thought it was quite a relaxing experience, having lunch by one of Japan’s largest caldera lakes. We were actually on the Sunayu Onsen side, but since our tour guide didn’t let us try that, I shall include my review here instead. In fact, apart from us, I didn’t see any other tour groups here or any locals relaxing in the onsen. It was quite cloudy that day, but at least the view of the lake wasn’t obscured by dense fog, so we had quite clear views of the lake during our lunch.
We were here just before the Japanese schools break up for the summer and the place was really quiet. There are footbaths fed by the hot springs around the lake and the usual pedlos. It was obvious from the sale of childrens' buoyancy aids in the souvenir shops that swimming in the lake was allowed, but we didn't see anyone swimming, though we did put our feet in from the benches at the edge and the water was warm.
Stayed on the lake for your nights. It escapes the clouds of Lake Mashu. Very tranquil. No sign of that monster paired with nessy.
