There is a room that exhibits the ryu-hyo (流氷) aka drift ice.At the top floor 4F there is an outdoor observatory where you can see the sea okhotsk and drift ice.

little small lovely museum, for those who visit Abashiri, then this is the place you should stop by. It may take only 1-2 hours maximum. You can see the clione (sea angel) up close, with good VDO presentation about Abashiri.

We happened to be passing by as our accommodation was only a few streets away. It was late June (summer) and obviously there isn't any drift ice at this time of year. Also known colloquially as the Drift Ice Museum, I found the visit rather uninteresting and uninspiring. The facility itself is rather small and the building certain looked and felt old and in need of a renovation. They have a large freezer which you can walk through. They store some drift ice there and you can touch it. Otherwise, there's not much else in there. Upstairs there's a cinema that shows a documentary about the seasons and about drift ice, although it was in Japanese with English subs. There's also a few exhibit areas with text and displays. Further upstairs there's a 360 degree indoor viewing platform where you can see Abishiri city, the sea of Okhotsk, the nearby lakes. While the view is lovely, I don't think this place is really worth a visit in any other season than winter. Even in winter, only visit on a crystal clear day. Even considering that, ONLY visit if you REALLY don't have time to see the drift ice up close on the ice breaker or by the shoreline. My verdict, save your money and time and visit other nearby attractions. In all fairness, it appears they were building something new right next to the current building. No idea what it will be, could be a new extension for new exhibits and activities, but in June 2014, they were still laying the foundations.

Perhaps because the explanations were on Japanese and I don't understand Japanese, I didn't find the visit all that informative. But I'm sure it must be for those who can read and understand Japanese. The highlight for me was the cold room with drift ice and even stuffed animals that usually go with the drift ice. It was minus 16 degrees. They gave me a wet towel to swing around in the room and when I left the room, the towel had frozen.Another highlight is the cute and luminescent sea creature clione aka angel of the sea.

One of the highlights of the trip as entering a room that was filled with the real sea ice they harvest from the sea. You can wear their warm clothing and then you're given a damp towel, walking inside it soon freezes to show you how cold the room is.The movie that's played shows you some of the natural beauty of the area. There's subtitles which makes it easy to enjoy,The exhibitions are informative, except it would be nice to see some more English Translations. Also you get to see some of the creatures that live in the sea ice.

This facility is located near the summit of Mt. Tento (i.e. Tentozan). From the signs at the entrance, I’m guessing the museum recently underwent a refurbishment (?). It’s now named Okhotsk Ryu-hyo Museum, rather than Ice Hall as the Tripadvisor page suggests. Entry fee for this museum is around 500yen for an adult, not too sure about child fares though… At the start of the tour, a guide will bring you to this mini theatre where they’ll screen a 20-minute documentary. The commentary is in Japanese, but fret not, as there are English subtitles. The video is something like those National Geographic documentaries; in a short span of 20 minutes, it succinctly introduces you to the climate and ecology of the area very well. The information isn’t very dense and very easily understood which is what I liked about the video. After the video, we went to see some of the underwater organisms that live around here. One in particular, the “sea angel” (Clione limacina) stood out as a really fascinating organism. I thought it looked pretty cute! For those who are into zoology, this organism is ranked under phylum Mollusca and class Gastropoda, meaning the sea angel is actually a shell-less gastropod! =) Apart from these fascinating sights, there is of course, the room where they keep the actual pieces of drift ice. The cold didn’t allow me to stay too long unfortunately, and they don’t provide jackets unlike the Kitanomori Ice Pavilion because it isn’t as cold anyways. This place is suited for those interested in environment and ecology, and if you’re looking for something cultural or historic, the Abashiri Prison is just nearby.
