If you visit Toco then you should have visited the lighthouse at some point. The drive is long and there are no food/bathroom facilities. The view of the lighthouse and at lookout rock is splendid. Safe during daylight and a solid family location.Recommend that you stay overnight at a resort or beach house if you are coming from a far enough location on the island.
Sweet spot, not Trinidad in Trinidad. The un spoilt beauty of Toco is exhibited at this Historic point.A must visit but hit eh road early if you coming from South.
I visited the Galera Point Lighthouse on a sunday trip through the northeast.Beautiful place, nice view of the ocean and nearby rock formations, but that's about it. If you've got the time and will to visit, be sure to bring picknick goods (food and drinks), because there's no touristic infrastructure.
I would like a hand here. Yes, a perfect scenary for enjoying nature, you can even see Tobago from this point. Although, you can see dirt all around, empty cigarette boxes, empty beer bottles. Guys, come on.
There's going to be an extremely long 2 to 2 hr and a half drive to get there from the West of Trinidad; more if you're coming from Central Trinidad. The drive is only nice if you are driven, there are serious potholes, dugouts, warped and narrow roads to navigate. The beach on holidays is packed and there are a series of beaches along the stretch to choose from. The main beach was not pleasant as there were too many stones underfoot . The drive in was muddy, but that happens mostly when it rains. There were a lot of vendors from which items could be purchased, but heavy eaters must walk with there own meals. there were preserved fruits like plums, chenettes and mangoes for sale. there was also sea moss available. people were also selling life preserves and fun items and toys for kids. Parking is plentiful. All in al, I'd give the ride to and beach experience a 5 out of 10.
My husband and I took a beautiful, three hour drive to visit the Galera Point Toco Lighthouse and we were pleasantly surprised! The place was clean and there were lovely little huts to sit under and have a picnic. The bathrooms were clean and conveniently located. But the best thing of all was the view of the coastline! It was absolutely amazing! The expanse of the sea was majestic and made us feel a bit insignificant! The lighthouse itself was in a good condition and provided great historical information. There was no cost to enter and a small fee of TTD$1 to use the bathroom. Even though there were no food vendors present, there is a lovely beach nearby where there are lots of small shops that you can get drinks and eats and have a nice cool swim.I will definitely be returning to this scenic and peaceful place. The drive was long, but it was so relaxing to watch the trees and hear birds as you drove along. Toco is a beautiful place to visit!
"Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, kill nothing but time"A quote from the sign at the lighthouse that I will take with me wherever I go. The drive to the lighthouse is full of beautiful beaches and perfect photo ops. A little of a drive depending on where you are coming from. The view from the rocks is spectacular, during the day or at night. A visit during the day is nice because there is seating around that let's you sit, eat and lime while enjoying the beautiful view. Small parking lot so it may be best to visit during the week rather than the weekend.
The ride to the lighthouse took us past several beaches that we got out to look at. The ocean view from the grounds of the lighthouse were spectacular. On the grounds of the lighthouse, we saw the first of many termite nests. There were some almond trees, but the nuts were not ripe to eat. Vultures were everywhere! It is too bad the grounds are not kept up better. The trash can was full and it appeared that it had not been emptied for some time. We continued on our way to the end of the road along the northern coast. It was nice to see the country side and small villages. Road work was being done. I am glad we were not driving! We took a picnic lunch, but there are places along the way to eat. I am glad we went.
The area is great for picnics, sunbathing, and surfing. The area beaches will runnout of parking space during the holidays, such as easter weekend. The drive is very scenic as travel is thru various villages.
A very beautiful lighthouse, build with Queen Victoria's initials on! Lovely views out to see. Saw a green turtle swimming around off the rocks. Lovely spot for a picnic as there are lots of tables in shady spots under trees.
Visited the light house as I travelled back from Grande Rivière.Didn't expect much. Free entry. But was surprised and the views surpassed my expectations. The grounds are clean and well kept. Places to have a picnic. But there is a walk way onto the rocks at the back. That's where the magic occurred. The sea was rough and as the waves crashed against the rocks lovely sea spray came towards us. Also a few blow holes. We decided to climb to the bottom. Got some lovely pics.Great day out.Excellent picture point.
We drove up from Port of Spain to have lunch. You can see Tobago from here, taste the sea spray, and hear the thunder of waves crashing. Lovely visit. Take a swimming suit and a towel so you can take a dip at Salybia while you are near.
We didn't actually go up the lighthouse, I don't know if that is possible. However, it was a nice little trek through sharp rock formations to get to the sea, which is very rough and can be quite spectacular!
The drive from the Piarco International airport to Toco beach is at least 2hrs long. This beach is situated on the most northerly stretch of coast along Trinidad’s coastal road between Toco and San Souci. It is a steep stretch of shoreline with white sand containing remains of white corals. The drive is tedious and undulating since its along the coast and have to pass over the mountain range but its a scenic view and in one with nature, away from the hustle and bustle of city life, and quite a sight of what life was before complete modernisation.Along the way there is a 24-kilometer long line of beaches and rivers at almost every nook and cranny in which one can bathe ( one can enjoy beach hoping). Some of the popular bathing areas are Valencia River, Matura beach/ River, matelot, Gran Revere all of which can be a diversion for Turtle watching. Richo beach for hiking. San Sou, Salybia beach, which has a lot of tourist attraction activities, like kayaking, hiking, bathing & fishing, which also has life guards on duty. About 10 mins before Salybia Beach is Salybia Beach Resort and Spa. As you look far out across the bay one can see the meeting of the waters of the two coasts by its two distinct blue colours of water the Caribbean sea on the north and the Atlantic Sea on the East. This is a relaxing and welcoming sight to visitors to this magnificent bay with a wisp of the cool, gentle north east trade winds for which the country is well known However be sure NOT to visit this area during Public holidays, especially EASTER, because there is traffic since quite a a large number of people head to that beach in cars and maxi taxis and bus loads of people. a lot of people pitch camps, for the long weekend almost for about 4 days so its cramp. the sight is like a" shanti town", so its very distatefull and a turn off, but otherwise on days other than public holidays, its a very relaxing bathing area, since the waters are very calm near the bay only for a few kilometers, beyond that due to Atlantic swells causes rugged waves to form that a re not suitable for swimming, making it otherwise ideal for surfing and other such sports. Fishing is a popular further out to sea to catch large fishes. The steep shoreline at Toco Beach is an ideal nesting ground for sea turtles. In nesting season, hundreds of Leatherback Turtles come ashore to lay their eggs, The Ministry of tourism can be contacted to organise tours for turtle watching. It is an amazing experience to witness the drama of the reptiles coming ashore in large numbers performing its life cycle before your very eyes. This is one of life's rarest moments being so close to this spectacular event of nature,s evolution. There are Volcanic rocks in the sea on either side of Toco Beach creating an scenic view for visitors. Waves crash against these rocks creating Atlantic sea mist, which is a very relaxing andpeaceful sight. Toco with its National Museum, Galera Point lighthouse on the easternmost point of the island, Fishing Rock facing the Caribbean Sea. As you approach the light house its no spectacular sight. Walking along the border of the area is when one can see the vast ocean and the exciting to get to the beautiful sight of nature and its effects. The trail is a bit intimidating to get closer to the coast line but very intriguing. For some its very daring as you see others bravely trekking down the cliff to go fishing others sitting on rocks feeling the waves crashing at their feet while others take the risk of actually going in for a dip or two. near the light house are some picnic benches and table and carrot sheds to relax.
Now called the Kishawn Walcott Lighthouse in honour of our country's first gold medal winner for the Javelin throw at the 2012 Olympics. A drive through Toco is always scenic and choc full interesting sights along the way. There is a lovely coral beach with white sand just before the lighthouse, then you get to walk along a path that takes you to the lighthouse. Pity you can't enter, but it makes for wonderful photography. There is a pathway all the way to the sea and if you are lucky, you can experience a blowhole.
