Nature's creations are all spiritual experiences to me. This is where my higher power spends the summer. HP spends the winters in Canyon de Chelly, AZ. Two of the most beautiful spots in the world. It is a long hike to the dock but well worth it in itself. This inland fjord had vertical walls of rock, water falls and lots of wind. In the middle of summer with the wind blowing across the pond I darn near froze. I have been here several times and wouldn't miss it for the world. And if you have never been to Newfoundland, try to plan a visit with lots of whale watching boat tours.
We did the entire western Brook experience. We hiked the trail searching for moose however we weren't able to find any, the boat tour through the channel is absolutely breathtaking! Tall cliffs, foliage galore, small animals. Best of all is spotting out the faces in the cliff. There are several of them. It was a great day trip. The fish truck down the road was a great was to end our day
Did this boat tour in Aug 2014. Very informative and scenery was breathtaking. A must do while in Gros Morne.
It was a drizzly day for us, and the walk to the boat is a nice one, but takes a good 30-45 minutes at a steady pace. We seen 2 moose on our walk. The boat is crowded, so I agree with a previous reviewer, try to get the very back seat or front early, as you will most definitely have the other traveller's in your photos. We would've loved to do the 5-day trek, but did not plan it into our itinerary. We were only exploring the north west of NFLD in 7 days, but would definitely love to go back and do the trek. The guides are very knowledgeable and provided some comedic relief throughout the tour. We would definitely encourage anyone visiting Gros Morne to Check out Western Brook Pond.
I was there myself, past the test for map skills. I got the permit to hike 5 days from the end of the boat tour.. It wasn't easy, but the view from the top of thefirst cliff is amazing.. the best of whole national park.. the boat tour was fun and knowledgable.. and of course with amazing view also.. the only thing is it's much easier for you to have your car to go there and you need to WALK a while to get to the boat.. go there 1 hour plus before your departure time so you can have enough time to walk to the boat and enjoy the trail..
The scenery was wonderful, the narration by the guide was excellent. The boats are crowded so if you want to do some photography try to get a good spot early.
Such a great tour. Enjoyed the short walk to the boat and once we arrive at the dock we had some time to explore. On the boat tour we saw moose crossing the lake. One of the highlights of our trip.
This is a stunningly beautiful place. A gale was coming up as we arrived, so the boat tour was cancelled half-way through. Our money was refunded, but we could not come back again.
This attraction is a must see, it is the iconic view of western Newfoundland found on all their advertising. While the view from the boat is not the one you see the picture of, it is no less spectacular and in many respects more. The walk in to the boat is pretty easy for an able bodied person, took us about 40 mins without rushing. The boats are all in good shape and appear well maintained, the crew and guides are competent and very approachable. Lots of information here on the geology of the area, for those that care about the natural world it is worth the visit for that alone. Spectacular views are the bonus.
We made reservations for the Western Brook Pond boat cruise for a day when the wind and the rain made the tour impossible. Since we had extra time, we re-booked for the following day. It was still rather windy, but the captain decided to make the tour possible. He advised us about the choppy water and anyone not wanting to go was given their money back. It was a fantastic cruise! The water was a bit choppy, but nothing that bothered anyone who went. The captain and tour guides were very knowledgeable. So not only do you have the vast beauty of the fjords, but you also learn a lot about the area from someone who is proud of their homeland park. They also explained why we had a gentleman jump out at the halfway point - he was beginning a 4 day hike for experienced hikers. We also saw a moose on this trip! The walk from the parking lot to the tour takes about 30 - 45 minutes, but is an easy walk through forest and peat bogs. The flora makes the walk very worthwhile on its own merit. The restaurant at the tour site serves delicious soup and sandwiches. If you are near this part of the island, this is definitely on your "must do" list. And, as we learned, don't hesitate if the day is a bit rainy and foggy (there is a covered indoor area on the boat) - it just adds to the charm!
Now I have lived in a large portion of the provinces of Canada, as well as have visited all but one so needless to say that when I tell you there are some of the most breathtaking sights I have ever seen, I am not saying it lightly. The boat tour was a bit choppy at first but it wouldn't be a boat ride without some waves splashing up (but for all those that have a fear of water but are on a boat anything there is a covered indoor area with windows)Now the guides truly are Newfoundlander whether it be the jokes they tell or the pride you can hear when they talk about there province and parks. They share with you lots of geography and history and even explain to you why people jump out halfway through the tour with back packs on ( it was because they were doing a expert hiking trail not just because they were crazy)All in all if you are in this part of the island, or even if you're not you should drive here and experience the sights and sounds of nature.
The Western Brook Pond tour requires an easy 45 minute hike (one way) to get in to the boat. You should definitely make reservations because even though we went during a cooler part of the year, it was pretty packed.I've done this tour twice and both times, I've been lucky enough to see moose on the hike. When we did it, it cost $60/person and the tour is 1-2 hrs. Dress warm because it's chilly out on the open water. You can sit inside, at the back of the boat outside, or upstairs (also outside). After the boat gets going, you can move about as you please. Western Brook Pond was a fjord before the land rebounded and cut it off from the ocean, so the rocks are pretty majestic and beautiful. The tour guide knows the area pretty well, and was interesting. They don't talk the whole time, so you have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery. Oh, and if you're hungry before you get on the boat, there's a little café/waiting area at the end of the hike where you can get sandwiches, soup, and junk food munchies. There's also a small area where you can buy crafts/knick knacks. I highly recommend you use the washroom before getting on the boat as there isn't one on board haha.
My wife and I found the march of three kms to the lake a bit imtimidating but the boat ride and the beautiful mountain scenery made it all worth well. There were more on our trip than anticipated and the restaurant was running out of food = but it is the end of the season and judgement calls have to be made.
We took the Boat tour of Western Brook pond in August of 2014. The price for 2 adults and 2 children came out to be $150 dollars. The tour last around 4 hours and the scenery is, sadly, very monotonous. The staff on the other hand were very friendly and the boat was in good shape, with partial covered area that you can take shelter in, if it rains or gets cold. For the price we paid, we felt , the experience didn't really make it feel worth it. If you in a time crunch, definitely skip this and see the rest of Gros Morne national park.
We bought the boat tickets at Ocean View Hotel's ticket office and had a little less than an hour before departure. We had to hustle to make it. Bad for us, the morning was cloudy, but we had no choice as nearly everyday in Gros Morne was just as cloudy if not rainy. The boat tour took us to the end of the pond with entertaining running commentary on the pond provided by the guides. The scenery was spectacular as this "pond" was formed by glaciers & geology into the shape of a narrow fiord. Numerous places reminded me of scenes from one of the Lord Of The Rings movies. From Norwegian tourism adverts, I think the Western Brook Pond is very similar to Norway's fiords. Hmmm, seeing fiords without leaving North America. Even though hampered by the overcast, I still shot over 300 pix which attests to the beauty of this place. After the boat tour, we took the time to absorb the scenery on our walk back. The bog (thanks to the geology) created a cork that blocked the water from flowing out to the ocean. The walk through the bog was helped by wooden board walks and gravel path. A group was pushing a 3 wheeled wheel chair with special wide soft wheel had a tough time in certain parts of the path. We caught a glimpse of a moose cow & calf. Now we can say, we've experienced Nfld! There were many informative signs & displays explaining Western Brook Pond. There was a luncheon & washroom facility at the dock after the 3 km walk from the parking lot. To us, this was a "on the list to see" to elevated to a "MUST SEE" after we've been. Western Brook Pond was the high light of our Gros Morne trip & worth the $.
