Every time I go to the Reserve I see, and learn something new! An amazingly diverse amount of wildlife. Ranging from birds, ducks, geese, fish, beavers, otters, rabbits, garter snakes, turtles, and don't forget the female bobcat with her three kittens that is often seen on site. The Reserve is easily accessible, beautiful, and peaceful. A new trail has just opened, and the recently refurbished interior of the main building are all the more reason to drop by and explore. The Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve just gets better with time.
Good parking. You start out at a interpretive nature centre. Good displays and information. Small gift shop. Guides explain the park trails and what birds are in currently in season and from which trail and blinds they are best seen from. You get a park trial map and descriptive walking guide. Bring your binoculars and spotting scopes. Cameras too. Wonderful trails and walkways, well maintained, easy for wheelchairs and strollers. Many trails of various lengths. Peacefull, beautiful, photogenic. Trails are marked with directional signs. The beaver population here is spectacular (too much?). Many trees have been cut down (chewed down) and are in the process of being taking to the dams. Many, many more trees are half chewed down. I guess the little Canadian Logos (Beavers) are coming back to finish these trees off according to some schedule. All in all a great time. Bring a picnic. Oh, did I mention it's all free? Definitely an Excellent.
I haven't been through it when the heron are nesting. There is an information building. They have maps of the trails to go on. It has recently been upgraded, so very good trails. I believe they are wheelchair acceptable. I don't think there is any cost involved.
It's funny because I see a lot of Herons in many locations in the valley, but never see them there. Too funny. The trails are great, the displays inside are interesting, but there could be more done I think. Seems lacking in some way.
An excellent place to come and quietly enjoy your surroundings. The birds, the small animals and a fantastic view.
Great place to visit, easy trails, good exhibits, child friendly, and one of the few places to see a heron rookery and waterfowl up close.
We go there a few times a year and walk the path though the woods and along the Vedder River and always see some sort of wild life. a curled up garden snake sleeping in the grass last summer, a bunny or busy beavers in the water. At times the Blue Herons are difficult to see, high above us in their nests. There"s a beautiful Information center on site, with washrooms. The only thing that would make it better is if we were able to purchase a beverage (I suppose people might through the used cups about) "No dogs are allowed inside and on the paths" but you can walk them along the dike path headed west at the entry. On leash of course. There is no entry fee and it's a pretty place for a family outing, couple, or group of friends.
Places to sit and enjoy the peace, watching the birds. It was wet and cold in January but it has huge potential for the better weather.
A lovely location to wander through quickly or spend the whole day. Commune with nature, sit and relax, wander the self-guided trails. Guided visits available. So much nature to learn about and enjoy.
We took friends from Vancouver Island there over the summer and they really enjoyed it. In fact whenever we have visitors its' a must see place to take them.
This is a great place to visit even in September after the herons have migrated. It connects with the Vedder River trail.
Terrific walk, lovely quiet and wildlife viewing ! Great place for walk with kids ~ Accessible and Silent if you choose !
I enjoyed this reserve as I like the outdoors and wildlife in its natural setting. I packed a lunch took binoculors and enjoyed the tranquil setting.
A great place to go see nature, lovely walking trails, quiet and peaceful,a beautiful nature place would go back for sure
We go there weekly, as we walk in that area. it is lovely quiet, with lots to see. Lovely to watch the Blue herons especially around the nesting time.
