Wanted to get some more skiing in for this year and it has been such an odd year with very little snow. Went to Whitewater for the first time, it was fantastic I ended up just purchasing a beginners lift pass which was great value - $35 for 3 hrs of skiing I think is fantastic, they had a variety of hills for the one side of the mountain.Great food to boot to, beautiful mountain.. did have to leave a bit early (2:00pm) since it was starting to get really busy and the snow was getting a bit mushy.... what a strange winter. I would recommend coming early, at this time of the year - there was less people and the snow wasn't mushy yet.
Our 3 days at Whitewater were definitely a case of what could have been! Unfortunately due to a pretty poor winter we were limited to only riding the groomers but it was easy to see what would be epic lines & great steep tree runs off of all 3 lifts. There was a park that was well maintained & the food at the base area was excellent & really good value. Would love to come back when the Snow Gods have been kinder!
Although this is not your typical snow year, I could see why it's so desired when there is powder. Still, the beauty surrounds you. For expert skiers, this place is paradise - steeps, trees and powder on a good year. The lodge has an extraordinary gourmet lunch menu. I also highly recommend skiing with one of the super friendly and knowledgeable "Snow Hosts." Looking for a new place to ski? Head over to Whitewater.
Wow!A nice small station with lots of snow. It'a a very cool place, the food and the coffee at the station are the best I had in all my ski trips.Dont go there if you are looking for a modern station with quads and stuff like that. But if you want to have fun without complications, Whitewater is the right place to choose. We are planning to return next year!
This is one of the best kept secrets in skiing and snowboarding. White Water has incredible snow conditions and very few people to compete with. Every day is a powder day at White Water! The best part about it is exploring all of the easy to access back-country, but don't venture out there without an experienced group.
Skied here for a day prior to departing to nearby Ymir Lodge for a week of backcountry skiing. Since this was my first time visiting Whitewater we took advantage of the ski area host tour to learn more about the area and the runs available (meets at 10am out front by the Silver King chair). Excellent food options are available at Fresh Tracks Cafe too. Due to the low snow levels this year (as of mid Feb), this place had an ample amount of snow and lots of open runs to have a great time (Note: several areas in Washington USA had to close in February). Close to Nelson with many lodging options and very good restaurants. I'm eagerly awaiting a return visit when I can experience the exceptional skiing at Whitewater during a dump of new powder snow.
Whitewater is an amazing place for worshipers of pristine powder snow, but it should not be thought of only as as a place for downhill skiers and snowboarders. Much more economically one can spend the day on their gorgeous cross-country ski trails (the most scenic I've seen anywhere), either on skis or on specially designated snowshoe paths. There's nothing like the quiet and serenity of pausing along such a trail and watching the sun create a halo of diamonds as it peeks through the frosty branches of a tall and slender Douglas fir tree. Whitewater--not just for the thrills, but also for the peace of mind.
The staff at the lodge and lifts were very friendly. The food was good and reasonably priced. We will definitely come back soon!
Very fun hill and Terrain with lots of back country tree boarding and skiing. It often has tremendous snow. Ski lessons are available for most ages.
This is the opposite of the mega resort. This is a great challenging hill loaded with good people who are excited to be there. No fashion shows, just awesome alpine skiing. The slow lifts actually provided a nice break. Whitewater has a lot of challenging terrain. Also the food in the cafeteria lives up to it's rep, it's awesome! Can't wait to get back here!
Just got back from a wonderful trip up to BC where my crew and I spent some time skiing Red Mountain and Whitewater (about 20 minutes outside of Nelson). I guess the weird thing was that Whitewater is a fair bit higher than Red Mountain (which is actually 3 mountains...Granite, Red, and Grey) but was foggy all the way to the top every day. This contrasted with Red as the base area there was socked in (every day) but the top was clear. Granted, we stayed at each resort less than a week but after talking with some other powderhounds I can't help thinking visibility can be a major problem @ both resorts. Too, even though WW was higher the snow that began falling (heavily) Friday afternoon turned into rain sometime during the night + crushed our hopes of a powder day Sat. (what was left was a frozen crust that was miserable to ski on...at least until it had been broken up by other skiers). But I suppose this is the risk you take when skiing BC. That said, the resort DOES get a lot of snow (over 40 ft. annually according to On The Snow stats) and lift tickets are on the cheap side. Too, if you're a, "back country," hike to the pow type you can find it in abundance there (remember, we're talking Canada not the US). Beyond the weather the logistics in getting to the mountain are good. The place is small so there isn't any place to stay on the mountain. Typically you've got to drive/ride up from Nelson as we did. With our own 'burban the route only took about twenty minutes as the snowplows did an exemplary job. The nearby town of Nelson is quaint and quiet (about 10,000 people), with wonderful vistas of the surrounding Selkirk mountains and Koontenay lake. Hotel accommodations are good, with the Hume hotel standing out as on of Nelson's oldest historic landmarks. We were fortunate to stay there and I can tell you the place oozes a wonderful character that makes you feel immediately at home. The rooms are fairly large with enough room that you can spread your ski stuff about. The food there was very good (if you like creme caramel you should order it here...it's the best I've ever had) and the people are very friendly. Room rates were about C120 a night...cheaper on average than the Best Western...which is oddly owned by the same guy who owns the Hume. Lastly, don't let the elevator catch you out: it goes BUMP! when it comes to a stop. So now it kinda feels like it's time to wrap things up here. A summary should include the fact that Whitewater + Nelson both have Cat skiing available. (Unfortunately we didn't get that far.) And for those who are new to skiing, the mountain might prove a bit daunting. Check the trail map and believe it. There are a lot of trees with some very deep snow. If you go in there be CAREFULL OF THE DEADFALL. There's enough of that too. And by the way, if you're lucky enough to get to experience this place ask a local about the fog. You kinda have to pry the answer out of them.
We went sking on christmas day. the staff was great and indicated it was a busy day. However even on this busy day the line up's were small compared to other ski resorts. The chairs are starting to show their age but still function fine. As a beginner skier I found the green runs were more difficult and comparable to blue level runs at Big White or Apex.
Backcountry skiing is accessed from the road or a single lift pass.Nice retro ski areaInexpensive with the good US exchange rate
Whitewater is a beautiful little resort nestled in a valley surrounded by peaks of glorious powder. It has some serious terrain and isn't overly accommodating to beginners although you can find a couple of green runs off the Silver King chair & there is a bunny hill. Other than that I would say to save whitewater for the big boys. There is no accommodation on the hill but there is a shuttle which I have never had to use as I hitch hiked up most days and got picked up within 10 minutes every time (It's the norm and there is a hitching post on the highway just out of the city). Food here is great and the view from the bar is awesome on a blue bird day. Also there is a real small and local kind of vibe & the staff here seem to always be smiling & loving life.Beware of riding here when the conditions are "early season" or "spring"... This little paradise is made for riding pow.
We were here early season when all the locals were complaining about the lack of snow but I thought it was great. The best part is "beginner" lift tickets that allow you access just to the one main chair are only $35. (I think there are some touring options off this chair too so if you are going out for the day it would be a good way to get up the lift cheap!)Also, the lodge has amazing food that is dirt cheap! Go for the Glory Bowl! :)
