As novice campers we weren't too sure what we were in for. We packed our tent, prepped our food and hoped that we had warm enough clothing and sleeping bags. We arrived in the early afternoon and were greeted at the main desk with a map and a smile. Oh, late check-in is after 10pm and there's a fee. The showers are situated just outside the main cabin. It costs $0.75 for the hottest three minute shower you could ever ask for, quarters only but they'll give you change. The rest of the campsite is dry... Well except for the ocean. There are dry toilets near the parking spots along the main road and while odorous, they're really quite clean. The parking spots are spaced along the main road and allow for a maximum of 100-150 metres to your camp site. Each site consists of a large wooden pallet on which you setup and anchor your tent. Be sure to bring plenty of rope to anchor it down or the blustery ocean breeze will carry it away. There's also a solid wooden picnic table and a metal fire pit with a pivoting grill. The grill is quite high and would require a big fire to heat your food so best to bring your own grill. Also, they sell firewood at $6 a bag but it's a little damp so be sure to bring your own wood and a good amount of kindling. Now for the main event, each camp site is placed to have an optimal view of the ocean. Our camp site (#1) was on a rocky ledge that you could climb down to be within 30 ft of the ocean. It was shortly after we set up our tent that we saw and heard our first whale. Minke whales splashed and ate not 50 ft from our tent. It was glorious. With a bright full moon we got to see whales by moonlight and were serenaded to sleep by their blowing and clicking. It couldn't have been more magical. The temperature overnight plummeted close to zero so be prepared for the chill, but any discomfort is blown away by the magic before you. They offer kayaking at the site 4 or 8 hrs which allow you to see the beautiful creatures up close. The primary whales seen Are the minke whales and belugas but if you're lucky you may even get a humpback. I would absolutely recommend this camp ground and we will definitely be going back next year.
