Went Wellington to Picton with hired motor home. Facilities at Wellington non existent. Took an age to board but left more or less on time. Facilities on board ok and the breakfast was ok. On one deck we mistakenly sat on canvas seats which were in a covered area. They were all wet so we ended up somewhat damp. Last hour or so spectacular scenery even on a damp and cloudy day. Disembarkation was thankfully quicker than loading.
You best get there early, at least an hour or an hour and half early, because it is often very crowed, and waiting in your car is the most you'll have to …. but once on the ferry, there is ample room to find a place to sit, or even sleep, all about the ship, as well as food and drink, including beer and wine …. was a quick 3 hours, honestly
Well organised, quick to load and disembark, good facilities on board, greatviews on crossing, even on a rather cool dull day. Consider booking the upgraded lounge, we didn't realise until the day and it was then full.
Ferry itself nothing special, but the journey relaxing. Beautiful in the beginning sailing through the fiord and in the end sailing into Wellington. Extra positive experience seeing black dolphins playfully swimming alongside the ferry.
What a spectacular boat ride!Especially, as you are approaching Southern Island, the scenery is breathtaking!
Took our rental car over (organised by the rental car company). An nice trip, no rough seas, overcast day but plenty to look at. Meal was good, plenty of different types of comfortable seating.
this a a awesome option of transportation from the north island to the South Island also this boat has a arcade a movie theatre a truckers lounge and a cafe also dogs can be transferred from the north and South Island so use this transportation soon
Wonderful 3 hour crossing from Wellington To Picton; fantastic scenery. We chose to travel in the 'Cove' Lounge; well worth the upgrade.
Loved our journey to and from South Island on the ferry. We are a group of four friends and we got great seating with fantastic views near the front of the ferry. The variety of hot and cold food on offer was fantastic. We did check out the upgrade facilities as we were considering booking these on our return journey, but felt that the the lounge area was significantly smaller and packed and the choice of food was limited, so opted to stay economy and had a fab return journey.
One of the best parts of our 2 week travels in NZ. LOVED the Premium Lounge. Excellent coordination with Avis Car Hire - drop off car at departure port and pick up new vehicle pre-arranged for arrival!
Given the choice again I would most definitely fly to wellington. We had about a three hour delay! The Picton terminal is very basic at best with very limited food or entertainment for a delay of that time. The boats are very dated the food was average at best. A long slow way to travel!
We boarded the ship with our car at least 20 minutes lare. No reason given for the delay. The cafe on board is disappointing with just one person behind the servery which invariably caused long delays. When asked why only one person I was told others on their breaks. When ordering butter chicken, rice and a naan I was concerned when I saw the bags of butter chicken floating in hot water. The bags are then opened and poured over the microwaved rice and cardboard over- zapped naan. I am surprised that heating the chicken in such a way is acceptable from Health and Safety angle. There is room for improvement in this area. On the positive side, the ship was comfortable with lots of things to see and do.
Some people suggested we miss this and take a plane and rehire a vehicle on the north island. I disagree, cruising through the Milford Sounds on a sunny day was beautiful. It was a smooth crossing. I recommend sitting outside for the journey but if this sounds boring there was a bar area, restaurant cafe etc.It seemed that this company had a better outside seating area than Blueridge? which looked smaller and downwind of the fumes, but that could be wrong just looked like it from where we were.
Our travel agent recommended we return our rental car in at Wellington so we could enjoy ferrying across the Cook Strait to Picton. Loading and unloading the ferry was chaotic. We decided it was because they pack so many people on the ferry. The weather was somewhat misty, so the photos we took were not very interesting. With the weather poor, we were pleased that our travel agent booked us a Plus Premium Lounge passage on the ferry. We were assured a comfortable seat, a continental breakfast, and a hot breakfast in a room with other adults. I was told there is also a Lounge for families, but I didn't go looking for it. Either way, who could ask for a more comfortable way to pass the time between the North and South Islands?Definitely pay extra for the Plus Premium Lounge.
