This cemetery is just outside the town and up a hill with nice views of the bay. For many it is a pilgrimage site, for others just a graveyard. You get out of it what you want I expect, but if you are already on Hiva Oa it probably would be a shame to miss the resting place of their "favorite son." Read something on Gauguin's (and Brel's) background to put it in perspective.

It's worth a walk up the hill to see the cemetery if for no other reason than to see the views. It's also interesting to see how cemetery's differ around the world. The famous graves are both near the foot of the hill, I missed Gaugain's at first and searched the whole place for it.

Really very lovely cemetery with white graves and skeletal frangipanis. Worth a visit. get a whole sense of the town from here and some idea of what Gaugin was doing here. Good for photographs. Actually as well as the cemetery the old remnants of settlements are fascinating, and especially the tikis. Worth hiring a car and getting to the site just close to town--do not need a guide. A bit overgrown but you get a sense of what was once here. You must also see the gaugin museum and his House of Joy. Women are very helpful in Gaugin Museum and told us where the grave was.

Worth a trip if you are already on Hiva Oa - but not as a destination itself. Great view from the cemetary itself and the Gaugin's grave site/marker is charmingly rustic.If you are on Hiva Oa you should consider a 4 hour or so drive across island to the Giant Tiki - which is extraordinary - an ancient sacrificial mound with 2,000 year old plus stone Tiki's - YOU MUST use a driver for these and there are plenty around. DO not attempt to drive yourself - the road is "scary" with no guardrails and tremendous drop offs. We had a group of six and paid about $85 each -- BUT be aware that you should have stopped off at one of the local banks first and gotten sufficient French Polynesian Francs first -- drivers don't like US $s or even Euros!

It is where Paul Gauguin is buried and you can see some his arts. It's necessary to pay a fee to enter. There's no many interesting things to do or to see...

We liked all the old grave sites and the view is amazing, as is Hiva Oa. What goes up, comes down and the walk down to town is steep but the road is paved. There are no guard rails and no bathrooms but there are facilites at the Gaugauin Museum.

Wenn man den Aufstieg geschafft hat, findet man gleich am Eingang des Grab Jaques Brels, dem belgischen Sänger. Das Grab Gauguins ist eine Etage höher. Ein Findling als Grabstein ist recht unspektakulär. Bemalte Holzstelen, kleine Steine schmücken das Grab. Vom Friedhof hat man einen wunderschönen Blick auf Atuona und die Bucht. Den Friedhof sollte man auf jeden Fallbesuchen.

Cimetière situé sur les hauteurs du village. Si vous êtes à pied, cela monte pendant longtemps. Très belle vue.

Der in wunderbarer Kulisse gelegene Friedhof ist für einen kleinen Spaziergang wirklich gut geeignet.Sehenswert sind sicher die Gräber von Jacques Brel und Paul Gauguin, aber man kann auch so einfach durch die Reihen gehen, den herrlichen Duft der Blüten wahrnehmen und ein wenig über die Vergänglichkeit des Seins philosophieren.

ヒバ・オア島の南部アツオナ村のトレーター湾に、貨客船アラヌイ3号で到着。ここは画家ポール・ゴーギャンと、ベルギーで生まれフランスで大成功したシャンソン歌手＆作詞作曲家のジャック・ブレルの住んだ島であり、彼らのお墓がある島として有名。墓地の入り口に近い場所にジャック・ブレルの墓があります。フランスでは超有名で、フランス人がたくさんお墓を見学していました。ブレルのお墓より右奥に、画家ゴーギャンのお墓があります。彼のお墓には、彼が制作した小さなオヴィリの彫像（複製）が立っていました。この墓地は高台にあるので、ここからの景色もなかなか素晴らかったです。

Comme partout aux Marquises, il faut avoir de bons mollets pour se rendre au cimetière du Calvaire (s'il fait très chaud ce jour-là, vous comprendrez mieux pourquoi il s'appelle ainsi !).Blague à part, le site est une étape incontournable lorsqu'on visite Hiva Oa que l'on soit artiste ou non, que l'on apprécie le répertoire du grand Jacques ou pas. En effet, un petit cimetière du bout du monde qui accueille deux célébrités internationales a de quoi intriguer !Et la vue sur la baie est magnifique. Peut-on rêver d'un plus bel endroit pour l'éternité ?

j'avais tant entendu d'éloges au sujet des iles marquises et des grands waowww tu vas aux iles marquises ..... moui bah une fois c'est bien mais sans plus. bien sur le calvary cemetery avec les tombes de brel et gauguin ainsi que leurs musées respectifs ...

Moment très fort du séjour à Hiva Oa, bien sûr, une émotion très forte. Inoubliable. Il faut y monter en écoutant "Les Marquises" et "Jojo", et si vous pouvez, apportez un peu de Frontignan et buvez le en souvenir du Grand Jacques
