We were a bit disappointed by Port Adelaide itself - shabby and not very much there, but the day was absolutely saved by the fabulous Maritime Museum. Full sized ketch in the first hall which you can walk around and explore the crew quarters, captain's cabin and galley. The whole building is packed with really interesting, beautifully displayed exhibits, from the River Dolphins to, when we were there, a fascinating exhibition of ship's medicine. Great interactive displays, really well thought out. Definitely worth a visit.

You will be amazed at seeing the history of South Australia through this fantastic museum, where the children are encouraged to enjoy the facilities and to check the Shipping registers looking for early descendants and their arrival in this Free Settled Colony of Australia.

Went on an organised tour which was very informative and well conducted. Then spent another 2 hours looking around on my own.

This was a wonderful museum that clearly does not get the business that it should, mostly due to the fact that it is a 15 or 20 minute drive from downtown. The exhibits were very well done with fascinating information. I did not get to see it all with two hours. If you are there between 10 and 2 you can usually get a tour up the nearby lighthouse.

All indoor exhibits over 3 floors including full size sailing ship, display of many bow figure heads. Ticket offers free acess to lighthouse. We came after visit to National Transport Museum and offer of 50% discount (its very reasonable without the discount).

The SA Maritime Museum offers a fantastic range of exhibits and you'll need to allow several hours to see it all. Apparently it's the oldest nautical collection in Australia with a collection that was begun in 1872. A lot of the exhibits are interactive, so adults and kids will find it equally entertaining. It's also worth a visit to the nearby Port Adelaide Lighthouse while you're in the area.

Reasonably priced - $10 per person as a I recall with an interesting collection of things to see. Highlight of the visit is the area downstairs that is set up as if you are really below a ship. It gives a close to authentic feel for what was experienced by travellers of the past. Worth a visit.

We stumble across this by accident and the entrance is small so you think this will be a short visit; we couldn't have been more wrong. We easily spent 3 hours in there; with well presented, interesting exhibits; lots on the life of immigrants and crew of the sailing ships that brought the settles down there. As they say one visit is not enough!

we went to see the arrival of the Adelaide. Stopped for lunch and visited the Maritime Musem too. The facilities are great. Fabulous to look up names of our forefathers and see the displays. We have been before and taken our grand daughters to educate them about our history and how past generations lived and travelled. They were glad they did not live in those days.

A great way to spend a couple of hours. A lot of information about early settlers and the growth of the region.

I just recently revisited this Museum. It was my third visit. I was glad that the staff at the front counter was interested in the fact that my grandfather came to Australia on a ship and also that he worked and died on one of the Port Adelaide based ships back in 1942. His name was not listed on their data base but he was happy to do some research and confirm his arrival and death on the ship. This museum has a place in my family history so I always like to visit when in Adelaide and take my children so they get to see what life was like for the men and women who travelled by ships to Australia. They have done a lot to the museum since my last visit and added more as well so it is well worthwhile having a look. It is also not too expensive to visit and your ticket entitles you to discounts at the other museums nearby. Totally recommend that you spend some time here!!
