The History around this town is totally unknown outside and the history associated with the Tin Dragon cottages found out by the operators is fascinating, make sure you ask them lots of questions
We came across this attraction while driving towards Scottsdale. It was only just off the main road and easy to park. You start by going into a nice hut that tells you a story of the person who mined the area (Great story about a Chinese man). Then you follow the sign posts around the trial that takes about half hour to do. good walk and interesting. Nice stop on your journey.Plus at the bottom you can see the lovely owners lama and como SeWe where lucky enough to be given some eggs from their chickens, which as we where camping we enjoyed.Although we did not stay at the cottages, Graham and Christine are genuine nice people and you would enjoy there company.
A v.peaceful way to spend a couple of days and fits perfectly withe the relaxed atmosphere. Look forward to staying again.
Fascinating to see the water race that carried water for mines in Derby - a lot to learn about this forgotten corner of Aus!
The Heritage Walk and Settlers Hut gave us some insights into the Chinese tin miners who held leases to mine this area, and the hard life they led so far from home. The Briseis Race walk took us through magnificent ferns and sassafras, along the race built to deliver water to the Briseis mine. Mostly easy walking and magical understorey to walk through
Graham and Christine have created a great interpretation center focusing on the tin-mining history & Chinese heritage of the area. Very educational.
A spring walk with the family - our 4 year old was fascinated by the story in the interpretation centre, then there were the wildflowers, birds and heritage to admire. Great spot, very interesting heritage.
Two walks on the property and another one adjacent make this a great place to increase your understanding of the tin-mining history & Chinese heritage of NE Tas.Graham and Christine have value-added the walks with excellent interpretation, art installations that are so good that it is best to leave them as a surprise for you, and a wonderful spot on one of the walks set aside for meditation. You will be enriched by doing these walks!Henry Ah Ping's Walk and story in the Settler's Hut is very well researched. While in the area you should visit the Tin Dragon Centre at Derby where the AV is excellent. We found Henry's wife Louisa's grave at Moorina cemetery just above the Burning Tower. You'll have to go there to find out what a Burning Tower. Google Tin Dragon Cottages and you will get good info about the 2 featured walks.
If you are in the area and feel like a nice walk through the bush give this a go. There is a 20 minute option or a 3 hour option from memory.
The owners of the cottages took us for a walk in person and told us the history of them
loved the whole thing, learning about the heratige
Spent an enjoyable couple of days walking in the area, following the old water races and learning about the history of tin mining by the Chineses in North East Tasmania. The operators Christine and Graham were extremely helpful. They also operate several self catering self contained cottages in a delightful setting
We came as a walking group of friends and were astounded as to what we discovered. We didn't stay but........What a wonderful location to begin our discovery of the Chinese heritage and tin mining links in North eastern Tasmania. Congratulations to Graham, Christine(and James of course) who have the vision to see this through and then the passion to develop this Eco tourism venture for us all to enjoy. A power of work has been done to develop very modern and welcoming cottages. A tremndous amount of energy to make access to the water races for us to explore. This, mixed with the couples knowlegde of the history made for a very memorable day. What a discovery. Fantastic.
