What a great surprise.Visited the cellar door and enjoyed the wine tasting with a very knowledgeable, energetic and friendly young lady (Adriane). The wines were all very drinkable.Followed this with a really tasty lunch (onsite) of pork belly roll with onion marmalade & garden slaw - soooo good. My wife had the Tartine (I think) with prosciutto, gorganzola & figs.Just the best way to spend a lazy Sunday :)Craig H
We dined in the garden on a near perfect day. After exploring Gundaroo, we found this is a great spot for lunch. The menu, although not extensive, provides excellent choice. We settled on a platter (there are three varieties) and the meats, pate and cheeses were absolutely first rate. Italian beer was a perfect choice on this occasion. The service was especially good. We'll return to this little gem - and try some of those excellent wines.
Stopped here after visiting Canberra and murrumbateman . We were taken through wine tasting with a fabulous young American girl. She is probably backpacking around our great country, but cudos to her as she knew her stuff, was enthusiastic and passionate about the variety of wines on sale. Will certainly return.
We booked and headed out there, expecting to find ourselves in the middle of a winery, but found ourselves in a very old, refurbished Cobb & Co stable in the middle of the small town of Gundaroo. For a very small cost, we sampled four dishes with matching wines, and had a very enjoyable time, finishing with a glass of wine on the porch that overlooked the herb garden and outdoor wedding venue. The staff was very pleasant and helpful.
A great spot to build a picnic, stock up at the cellar door, eat at the bar or on a sunny patio grab a coffee and a sweet treat. A short menu but very well executed. It is only a small place. We have taken a big group there and visited many times as a couple. We never go wrong. Fabulous people too. Thoroughly recommended for lunch on the drive to Goulburn from Canberra, with a slight detour.
The setting is a quaint rural township, in an very old hand built stone stables the decor inside was consistent with the expectation. A wander around the herb gardens was very pleasant. The lawns set up with white wrought iron tables and chairs for a wedding under the trees. The beautiful reception set up was stunning. Anyway,,, I was there for a wine and flood matching luncheon. I don't drink much but now I know why,, I hadn't tasted those kinds of wine with really great food. The educational experience was excellent, the hostess was fun and interesting the food beautiful combinations of flavours and textures. A marvellous way to re acquainted with old friends.
My husband thought he would surprise me with a brunch at Capital Wines Cafe. I think he got the bigger surprise as I walked out not only fully happy with the food service and coffe but with a dozen fantastic wines. If you go definitely try the corn fritters with salmon matched with the Rose. Simply delicious. Make the effort for the short drive to have a wonderful breakfast, brunch or lunch.
Have visited Capital Wines a couple of times now to taste their wine and buy some of their wonderful condiments and jams. Do like their wines and both times have departed with a half dozen or so. Coffee is good as well. It all takes place in a rustic, character-filled old shed, overlooking an extensive herb and vegie patch that they share with Grazing. Haven't eaten at Capital yet, but that is definitely next on my Gundaroo to-do list
What a gem! I was asked by a group of friends from Canada visiting Canberra to organise a winery tour. Not being a local and a current resident of the Barossa Valley I was concerned, I wasn't to sure Canberra had a wine region. I duly did my research an settled upon a couple of wineries, Capital Wines being my lunch venue and centrepiece. They did not disappoint, my friends and I sampled the Epicurean Lunch in the Cafe as the award winning Grazing Restaurant was closed. Hats off to Clare and the staff working on Monday 14 July, you did a fantastic job serving us great fare and educating us to the wines of the region. Great winery, great food.
I held my 40th birthday bash at Capital Wines in Gundaroo on Saturday night and cannot recommend it highly enough. The food, the wine, the venue itself, the service - all excellent. The stone stable building, the fire place, the music and the red wine were perfect for a wintery night. We had a beautiful buffet table and also circulating plates of delicious food. Nobody went hungry. Clair and Adriane were fantastic during the organisation and on the night itself. All for a very reasonable price. We also hired a coach to and from Canberra, to avoid any designated driver issues, which worked out really well.Incidently, a great spot for wine tasting too.
If you love wine, good food and a relaxed atmosphere then make sure you head along to this cellar door. The ambience is very comfortable and welcoming. We also had the Epicurean Lunch with the matching wine at the attached cafe, which was very tasty. We enjoyed sampling the wines on offer at the cellar door, and the cellar door itself has a very ambient feel to it. Highly recommend visiting this cellar door and the quaint cafe.
Very nice riesling and excellent merlot plus a lovely late picked auslese style riesling sweetie and an interesting tempranillo made for a pleasant stop.
Everyone raves about Grazers restaurant but I have to tell you the cafe isn't too shabby. Enjoyed a full lunch with glass of the wines we enjoyed best at tasting, all reasonably priced and very yummy, with fresh lettuce, lemon and herbs picked from the garden in front of us.The wines were also close to the best we tasted. Well worth the slight "out-of-the-way" to Gundaroo.
Hi Alan,Thanks for the review, I am glad you enjoyed our Salumi platter. The French onion soup comes with a large, organic sourdough cheddar and dijon sandwich. $19. It is not just a cup of soup for $19. The cost of the soup & sandwich is clearly displayed on the large blackboard, which you would have had to look at to order. We have many regulars visiting our cafe who love the soup and sandwich. I appreciate your review, but its not an accurate portrayal of our menu pricing. Please don't hesitate to call me at the cafe if you wish to discuss furtherKind regardsJennie Mooney
In the picturesque village of Gundaroo the cellar door is situated in the old stables of the Royal Hotel. The decor makes the most of the rustic stone building. We have had both the epicurean menu which matched wine and food and the a la carte menu on different occasions. The food /wine combinations were fantastic and the atmosphere was welcoming and friendly without sacrificing sophistication. The staff have a great wealth of knowledge regarding the wine and produce. Since first eating there we have returned many times and often bring friends with us.
