Located in the grounds of Blue Knob Hall Gallery, about 10km north of Nimbin, Blue Knob Farmers Market takes place every Saturday morning. It's usually quite a small market (except before Christmas and other special events) reflecting the rural community it represents, but it has several strengths. The first of these is the market's location. It's not only within the Northern Rivers, one of most beautiful areas of Australia, it's located next to a beautifully restored artist run gallery and cafe, where you'll also want to spend some time. Head out mid morning on Saturday, wander around the market, talk to friendly stall holders, then check out the current exhibition at Blue Knob Hall Gallery before having lunch in the gallery's cafe. The market's second strength is that it's a genuine, local community farmers market. It's seasonal produce is grown on nearby farms. A third strength is the high quality of that produce - the stall holders all practice organic farming principles / permaculture etc, plus they are all small producers. Everything you see for sale is very fresh or made with something very fresh!Market stall holders change over time but you'll always find a good range of fresh veggies and fruit, wood fired bread, seedlings and home made preserves and treats. Keep an eye out for all types of delectable honey at James' stall; the best ever fresh tofu at Andre and Kaori's stall; wonderful biscuits and seasonal preserves at Ian and Michelle's "Seven Springs" stall; Nimbin Show award winning seasonal produce from the "Goatie Hill Farm" stall and of course all sorts of seasonal goodies at Eric's "Backyarder Table" where locals drop off any spare produce and products. Workshops and talks are often held on a wide range of very useful topics. We also mentioned special event markets above. Last year these included a very popular Fibre Festival market and a Fermentation Festival (with Sandor Katz as guest speaker) plus visitors are always welcome at market birthday / christmas parties (where a very special Christmas cake is shared with everyone). If you are not visiting the region on a weekend some stall holders can be found at the Nimbin Farmers Market which is on Wed 3-6pm.
