Awful March flies! Big fat slow flies that land on you and they hurt!I'm aware they move around FNQ but this ruined our Babinda experience for us.Did enjoy a refreshing swim with locals though.
Wow! This is a must see place in QLD. Little Babinda is so unassuming yet host this wonderful spot. Babinda boulders are easy to get to and are not far off the road. It is really a place with gorgeous scenery. The water is so clear (and cold) and fresh. There is a small safety element with young kids but still they too can enjoy the location and a swim. There is a path and viewing platforms and informational signs to explain the area and the boulders. There are toilets and you could spend a day here swimming and enjoying the spot. best of all its free and not too far from Cairns.
Located just a short distance from the main roads, the boulders is a beautiful swimming spot. Equipped with changing rooms and toilet facilities, picnic benches and walkways to take you to viewing platforms. The creek had crystal clear water despite visiting in rainy season, and was a wonderfully refreshing temperature.
Just a short drive off the Bruce Highway south of Cairns are the Babinda boulders.Camping available but did not notice powered sites. The scenery is gorgeous. We did not swim as the river was fast flowing .Great walk to a spectacular lookout. Toilets and picnic facilities .Well worth visiting and could be easily overlooked.
Possibly the best swimming hole in the Cairns region! The water is so cold and refreshing you never want to leave!
Fun, Free and Beautiful. You wont be disappointed at the end of your easy 50 minute drive (about 62 km) from Cairns. There is a great swimming area right next to the very well maintained car park / picnic area, there are also clean change rooms and drop toilets. You will want to spend at least a couple of hours up here. We arrived at lunch time and had lunch under the under the trees in the picnic area and then went swimming in the cool water for the rest of the afternoon. You can buy lunch at shops in Babinda.Don't miss the walk to Devils Pool and Boulders gorge lookout. It is a short walk but well worth it. We also saw a pair of bush Turkeys and a small marsupial (possibly a Bandicoot) on the way back right near the picnic area.
The Boulders is possibly one of the best swimming spots close to Cairns. It is surrounded by thick dense rainforest and the water is cool (well cold for some of us), clean and is fresh mountain fed water - and you don't get sand stuck in swimmers. It's called the Boulders because of exactly that ... the huge granite boulders that you can climb onto and jump off into the water. There are picnic areas and walking trails throughout the area but make sure you follow the signs as it can be easy to lose you way. As much as we loved every bit of being here, the March Flys or Bush Flys were a real problem. Next time we will be sure to take the insect repelent. One more thing...stop in at the Babinda Bakery for some delicious breads, cakes and coffee to have as a picnic treat. Love it !!
I really enjoyed this place. It was such a gem. It was the last part of a day trip we took and it was such a great way to finish. The water was very clear and nice to swim in. I would have loved to stay longer in this area.
we didn't know this place before, we went there as it was part of our Paronella Park day tour program. We must say that this place is very love gem and it's simply amazing to end the day with a cool dip at the Babinda Boulders. The water is clear and cool, the place is quite, felt embraced by nature.
A gorgeous walk in the rainforest to the boulders, then take a nice cool relaxing dip in the freshwater lake.
Well worth a visit! A nice walk along a paved path to have a look at the creek and Boulders. Then a wonderful refreshing swim in the waterhole. Toilets and changeroom available.
They are pretty spectacular but you probably wouldn't all day there. In a good location to visit other/similar attractions in the area though!
This is one of those places that you almost don't want other people to find out about because you don't want it to ever change! The water here is absolutely crystal clear and a most pleasant temperature (warmer than our hotel pool, but still refreshing on a warm day). Make sure you have a swim, the water is safe and the true beauty of the place is only accentuated from view whilst in the water. The walk to Babinda Gorge via Devil's Pool is only about 800m from the carpark and winds through beautiful rainforest. The views from the lookouts show clearly the amazing results of nature's water vs rock. Admittedly the fence at Devil's Pool could do with being replaced, however the current one does make it easy to avoid with a camera.A free campsite, toilets and changing rooms are the perfect addition. In summary, make sure you bring your swimmers, a towel and some bug spray (the March flies can be a little vicious) and enjoy one of Australia's few remaining uncommercialised natural beauties!!
Depending at what time of the year you visit the scenery changes as the water level changes. The walk to the devils pools is through lovely rain forest. At the end you get to see what nature and time does with water and rock.
arriving in the carpark and it looks like another lovely rainforest park and great place for a picnic. Have a walk down the track and you cant help be be struck by the awesome power of nature with the hewn rocks. It would be amazing in the wet season but relatively benign in October when it is really very dry. Stunning views from good vantage points. Back at the carpark and you can go for a swim in a large and serene waterhole - I only wish I had had more time. Take your insect repellant though. Once the temperature got to a certain point, the march flies were vicious!
