Mungalli Creek Teahouse is a charming Teahouse with breathtaking views over the rolling Atherton Tablelands, dairy cows and Mount Bartle Frere. A perfect spot to visit for lunch, morning or afternoon tea. On arrival you can enjoy free cheese and yoghurt tastings. Lunch is delicious here and I can never go past the Ploughman’s Lunch served with crunchy locally made bread, homemade mango chutney and jam plus a wide array of Mungalli cheeses (soft and hard) and cold hams – prosciutto, hams. Ideal for sharing is the cheese platter with a range of dips, breads, fruits and cheeses. The sweet delights on the menu here are exceptional and my favourites are the Quark Cheesecakes including the Sicilian Cheesecake made with full milk ricotta, dark chocolate, glace orange with a crispy cinnamon and biscuit base. The scones are light and fluffy served with delicious cream and rainforest jam – perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. You can purchase a wide range of Mungalli dairy products for take away including milk, sweet top yoghurts like blueberry and white chocolate or raspberry as well as the Greek yoghurts including cherry delight, berry bliss and vanilla and honey. They have a small selection of north Queensland products and produce available also including local tea, coffee, macadamia nuts, honey, dips and souvenirs. Service is always prompt and friendly. Open daily 10-4pm.
Mungalli Creek is a rather picturesque place to go for a weekend lunch or morning/afternoon tea, set in the rolling green hills of the Millaa Millaa district on the tablelands. They have a small, simple menu that mostly seeks to use the excellent dairy products they make, plus a small shop selling local produce such as honey, relishes etc. Ploughman's lunch, cheese platter, 3 cheese pie and scones with jam & cream all on the menu.Seating is not hugely extensive, either inside or (my preference) outside on the deck taking in the view. We had a cheese platter, which was a little on the expensive side but was a nice spread of vegetables, dried fruits, a couple of dips plus some fetta, camembert and tasty cheese. The main thing that ruined the ambience was the flies - my goodness they were voracious and many in number! So we spent the whole time waving them away from our food. I think setting up some fly baits outside wouldn't hurt as it makes it almost impossible to have food outside, which is a real pity.You can buy the dairy products and take them home with you - not a huge range of cheese (go to Gallo for that) but lots of yoghurt, milk and cream. Worth dropping in if you're in the area. And as mentioned by others below, the manager has an interesting (slightly blunt!) manner but I found it funny rather than offensive - he's a character.
I was on a bus tour and I was lucky enough to be on one that took us to the dairy farm. What a treat we had our own private tasting that was so nice. They make such nice fetta and the Mango Chutney is to die for. I love to see someone thinking outside the square and I love supporting our local products in Australia.
It's worth stopping at Mungalli Creek (on a good day) for the view across the hills to Mt Bartle Frere. The outside seating lets you just sit and soak it in! Unfortunately, there isn't much outdoor seating, probably because, on those characteristic Tablelands wet, misty days, you'd want to be cosy inside! Inside seating is also cramped, so just hope it's not too busy when you go. Food is the usual café fare - nicely presented and served. I would expect menu choices to showcase the dairy products ... but these do so only to a limited extent. There is cheese ... but small serves. Of course, the place is primarily a dairy farm rather than a café. There is a viewing window into the cheese/yoghurt preparation area - but on most of my visits, there has been little to see. There are limited tastings available. The cramped conditions inside the building, and the tasting area's location right next to the serving counter, make it a difficult prospect to taste if there are a lot of people around. So why go? The view and the setting are just lovely. And, of course, all the wonderful dairy produce is for sale. I love the array of yoghurts, cheeses, dips ... yes, I know it's available in supermarkets these days, but supermarkets just don't have the atmosphere (or that cow smell!)
We ordered the cheese platter for two paying extra for Camembert and lucky we did as there was no cheese only yoghurts. Very expensive for what was on the plate, not much at all
As Cairns residents we only buy Mungalli Creek full cream milk and not just because we want to support the local dairy industry but because we love it! This may sound ridiculous, but it's one of the few milks our connoisseur cat will drink!! So, it was with great anticipation that we ventured to Mungalli Creek Dairy Farm with visitors from Adelaide. Firstly, the setting! It's magnificently positioned off the gorgeous Palmerston Highway at the end of a winding road and with the café housed in a typical "old Queenslander" style building. No flash tar and cement car parks with characterless could-be-anywhere buildings - this place is a delight & we were already half won over. The décor was charming, the food was just great and the scones and jam were of course accompanied by thick, real cream. Let's hope it never changes!
We stopped here for lunch. There was a tasting platter available as you walk into the old house. We ordered lunch and coffee. There was a mix-up with the numbers and we were offered a number of dishes and drinks we didn't order. The prices were not cheep but value for money. The best entertainment was the gentleman taking the orders, he was a mix of Basil Faulty and Manuel. Very funny and entertaining. When we paid for our lunch he said don't give me a $50 note as my change has all gone, everyone is paying with $50 notes, so I gave him a $50, boy did he go off. Great humour = priceless. The location is great, situated on the ridge overlooking the valleys below. There are viewing areas looking into the dairy area, but you can't see much. The amount of local produce and products available for purchase was great. Local tea and an amazing amount of information about where the local stuff comes from
Revisiting after a visit just after the enterprise started up. Now into the swing of things for sure in a great way. Magnificent coffee..superb lunch choices in a great setting. Ploughman's lunch so enjoyable., The yogurts to die for. Those bush food flavors..oh yum. We have always tried to source these yogurts at many supermarkets. Sadly few and far between. Local produce foods also for sale. Glad we came back again. We enjoyed our visit. Great and very cheerful service.
My Sister & I recently visited the Mungalli Creek Dairy Farm on a trip through the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. We stumbled across the dairy farm along the way & deiced to call in. So pleased we did!! Beautiful views, friendly service & the best cheese platter for two ever. Topped off with a delicious berry cheesecake ( even if we had to take it away after the filling cheese platter) & a cappuccino. The track into the dairy is narrow & a little rough but if you take it slowly, there is no problem & the trip is worth it.
Stopped in for a quick bite - well the pumpkin soup actually and was super impressed by the friendly staff, quality of food and judging by the smiles on the faces of the other diners, I wasn't on my own.
The fella who takes orders and does tastings was so sweet and cheerful, i was so tired at the time i missed most of his jokes, but he was a real sweetheart. it was pouring down with rain on our arrival, so the single windy road up to the farm/shop was an adventure on its own (not a bad one) quite beautiful. the food is really lovely, i have to go gluten free (recent change) and the staff were really helpful and over all very accomodating, i was able to eat the frittata (delicious) as well as cheeses and yoghurts etc YUM. The cafe is set up sweetly and comfortably and there is a view of the dairy from several tables and the gift shop supports heaps of local (especially organic) small companies/products.A lovely place to go, by self, with friends, with kids :)
We were heading back home from Cairns and made the decision to go via the Tablelands as my husband had never been there before. Apon going through Malanda we saw the signage for the Mungalli Creek Dairy Farm and jumped at the chance to stop in as my 10year old LOVES their mango yoghurt !!!!! ..... as do I !!!!! :) The drive there is beautiful and being a HUGE lover of cows I got to see alot of them !!!! The farm itself is lovely :) There is the cafe/shop and has sitting both inside and out. Wandering around freely outside which I thought was cute were chickens !!! I had the devonshire tea and my 10 year old and hubby got a mango smoothy. The scones, jam and cream were just out of this world - just lovely. The jam was made from wild berries from the local area and the cream was fresh jersey cream. The scones were light a fluffy :) The mango smoothy was the BEST I had ever tasted!!!!! I wish i had not had it though as I am craving one already!!!!! If you are in the area it is MOST certainly worth a visit !!!!!! Go for brunch, lunch or afternoon tea ... or whenever !!!! We loved it :)
A nice little cafe in the tablelands. Unfortunately it was clouded in so wasn't the usual view to enjoy. The lack of a cheese tasting was a disappointment. Overall their seasonal cheese stocks were quite depleted. The 3 cheese pie and salad we shared for lunch was very tasty. There was a good variety of other gourmet products to purchase. Like many places on the tablelands it does tend to be a bit on the expensive side for what you get, a block of cheddar, a tin of vanilla ground coffee, two coffees and one light lunch was $56! The mugs of coffee were very good though. Service was friendly albeit the German proprietor was pretty strident in voicing his opinions. Worth a visit but don't let your expectations get out of control.
A great place to stop for a yummy snack on your trip through the Atherton Tablelands! It's not your typical tourist destination. It's small & quiet & off the beaten track. The staff were lovely. The ploughman's lunch was so, so good! They make THE BEST mango chutney I have ever eaten!
Liked the pies and cheese, good place to break for lunch. Perched atop lush green hill overlooking a picturesque valley.
