mountain fresh trout & salmon farm

Had a wonderful time fishing and the kids caught a salmon each that was delicious, we even went back as the kids had so much fun...

I took my five-year-old for his first ever experience of fishing. It was the best day by far from our recent holiday in the region. Within literally seconds of dropping the fishing line into a pond, he caught a great big, whopping salmon. It happened before I even had a chance to talk to him about what to do if/when we catch a fish. I think I might have provided a little entertainment for other families, jumping around squeamishly trying to pick up the fish and put it in the bucket of water. When you first arrive, the lovely staff give you a bucket, some bait, your 'donger' (to dong the fish over the head to kill it quickly - I struggled with this), and point you towards the fishing poles, to select the one you want. The poles are simple bamboo sticks of varying length & thickness, each with a fishing line and hook attached. The staff are all super friendly, cheery and helpful.We quickly caught three huge salmon before moving to a different pool and catching two smaller rainbow trout. The staff cleaned and gutted them for us before weighing them and popping them on ice. They even gave us advice on cooking and storing the fish. We fed eight adults and five kids with our catches for the day, and had a very direct & hands-on lesson about the food chain and where 'food' comes from.The setting is absolutely beautiful and so very peaceful. I highly recommend this to every non-vegetarian or non-vegan for a lovely day out (and for facing the music by experiencing the purposeful shift from life to death that happens for we meat-eaters every day).

Drove Down from bright on a bad weekend and had the best time at the farm with my fiance, the boys came out showed us how to fish and off we went 20mins later boys came back showed us how to fish the right way as we had no idea and my fiance caught a trout before I did she was enjoying her self we then moved to a bigger pond and caught another 4 trout then went for a walk to the salmon pond not even 3 seconds in to it my fiance rips out a $100 fish .... 30 seconds later she rips out a $70 fish .... We left with 2 salmon 4 trout paid $230 and the boys cleaned and gutted our fish for free also packaged the fish in ice to bring back to Melbourne Had the best time ever was the best part of the weekend

We stumbled across the Mountain Fresh Trout & Salmon Farm by accident & are so glad we did.It's tucked away just off the main road, but is sign posted well. Crossing the Ovens River just as you enter the property is a bonus...a beautiful photo opportunity!The free admission was a bonus, as was the free fishing poles & bait!You can sit & catch your own fish, which the staff will gut & clean for you BEFORE pricing!There are 18 ponds of fish, 20 acres of beautiful gardens, picnic areas & a shop that you can purchase yummy fish products from. We got some amazing smoked salmon & trout pate to die for! There are ice creams & drinks available too.The staff were friendly & happy to explain the layout of the farm & how the fish are grown & moved from pond to pond.A very interesting & relaxing hour - well worth the visit!
