Long pathways right next to the mutton bird nesting areas, l waited patiently but alas no live mutton birds around but instead some delightful and very laid back Black wallabies were feeding just off the path. One wallably even had a paddle near the island entranceway then jumped along the path inbetween bemused human pedestrians. A peaceful and quiet experience with beautiful ocean views.
We rode our bikes around this island. Half was made paths and half we had to take our bikes on the beach sand. Is was so very peaceful. Cool, crisp sea air, the roar of waves and the calls of the sea birds made this a wonderful hour or so (depending on how fast you peddle ... we went slowly by choice). Stopped to talk to local fishing "experts" (they must be, they caught fish), visited the lighthouse and checked out the signs of a long gone house and garden. Stick to the paths, the birds appreciate this.
Watching the Mutton Birds return to their nests in the evening is a wonderful sight and quite remarkable. Well worth having an early or late supper to make sure you don't miss the sight.
My wife and I visited this island just off Port Fairy around dusk on the evening of 10th March. We had seen many kangaroos in the drive from Auburn and Adelaide but they were all dead on the side of the road. This was our first sighting of real live ones and it was a great treat for both of us to see.
My family and I decided to have a walk around the island and we weren't disappointed. There are different walks you can do, some gentle and small, others the whole way round (which we did). We came across the Black Wallaby near the lighthouse just by chance and clearly he likes having his picture taken as he wasn't phased by us. Parts of the beach were sadly covered in dead gulls which wasn't very nice to see but i think there were notices about poison around so it might be down to that.If you have a spare hour or so then it's a pleasant walk.
We stopped in Port Fairy for a short rest, at least that was the plan. After discovering Griffiths Island we decided to walk to the lighthouse and explore the Island a bit more. Good choice! This is a beautiful place ...
We went there around the end of the day and could see quite a number of wallabies. The track last about 1 hour, 1.5 hours, is nice and quite.
Although I tripped and fell here resulting in a severe wrist injury the island is well worth a look it takes about an hour to walk around and makes for a pleasant walk ...
I took this walk at about 10 o'clock on a slightly misty day. This was a good time to do the walk round the island as I saw 3 wallabies right near to the path which was amazing. I also saw various birds, The walk was very pleasant and does include some walking on the beach. It was quite isolated and as I was on my own I was feeling slightly nervous however there were some other people I recognised form our hotel so I must admit I kept them in sight.
While at Pt Fairy take the opportunity and do the 3km walk around Griffiths Island.Watch the ocean waves pounding onto the shore as you walk to the lighthouse. Its an easy pleasant walk.Do yourself a favour, after your walk stop at the East Beach Fish &Chips on the wharf and have some of the best fish & chips you'll ever experience.
Spent a lot of my spare time procrasinating around this little island. Such a nice walk on a hot day...not so much when its hammering down mind you!! Some great scenery and great wildlife with the odd Wallaby blocking your path
We were told that the mutton birds fly back at dusk(about 830pm) to shore so we went to the viewing platform.we waited almost till 9pm in the freezing cold (and it is summer!) before we could see the birds flying back dark silhouettes, nothing spectacular, can give it a miss. Would advise you be patient and prepared with warm clothing and a rug. We did come across the wallabies hopping out to greet us at dusk!the walk out to the lighthouse takes about 20 minutes, easy walk and can see black swans.
Accessed by way of a picturesque walk alongside a busy yachting marina, Griffiths Island is a must visit if you are in Port Fairy. It takes approximately two hours at a steady pace to walk around this wild windswept place. A colony of Black Wallabies roam across the Island and we did indeed glimpse two or three, which appeared from time to time out of the long grassland. There is a superb panoramic beach and huge waves complimenting a blue sky punctuated by wispy clouds. Griffiths Island is a photographers delight!
Stayed in Port Fairy over a weekend and really enjoyed the walk around Griffith Island. The backside has a really secluded beach, which had the weather been more inviting we would have loved to paddle around and relax on the sand.
We talk a walk in the evening as advised and saw the Wallabies and lots of bird life, including Pelicans and the Shearwaters (Mutton Birds). If you are there at the right time of year make sure you stay until dusk to see the Shearwaters return - be patient as they only come in when it is almost dark.
