An amazing old building, easily missed, if you don't cast your eyes left coming up from the beach. The building, alone, is sufficiently interesting, even without the everchanging displays it hosts. Really worth a visit in this sleepy time-warp type of town.
Only 300 metres from the beach. What a unique function venue, why not hire for engagements, Hens Parties, Weddings, significant birthdays/events. Constructed in 1856 in rough sandstone and with Baltic Pine floors the interior spaces are quintessential mid 19th century industrial style: large open spaces with heavy timber posts and beams enclosed by natural stone. Portarlington Mill is an elegant and inspiring function space. Run by dedicated volunteers proceeds go into the maintenance and upkeep of this old gem.Open from 12 noon to 4pm, Saturdays and Sundays from the middle of September to May 31st. Also open on Wednesdays during the month of January.
The Portarlington Mill is the most amazing 3 story beautiful stone icon and not only does it stand for itself with an interesting history of being a flour Mill, then a home which became dereclict, to be restored to a standard that can only be described as 'with love' for the building it was and now is. The third floor shows the history through out many decades and the first two floors are now often used for local talented Artist Exhibitions and the famous Bellarine Patchwork & Quilters Exhibition with the added spice of textile art as a biennial occurance. A wonderful place for wedding photos, for photographers and for those who just love history and art forms. It is around the corner from the pristine Portarlington beach, a walk from the shops, parks and playgrounds or you can grab a coffee and a bite to eat from the town and relax under the shelter of the lovely old trees on the grass for a picnic.
This is a lovely stone building, near the waterfront. It's an important part of local history and a little overlooker by travellers and touists alike.
Very interesting to hear about and see the history of the mill in Portarlington. The mill has had a number of owners and operated a brick manufacturing operation and is now well preserved and staffed by very knowledgeable volunteers.
A wonderful randomly located mill near the waterfront that is easy to miss unless you see the signs and look for it.Beautiful old building that should be seen by anyone who appreciates a bit of history and old buildings.Small fee for entry and a very helpful operator who has passion for the history and was happy to answer questions about the building and how it was used.Lots of old machinery on the top floor with the second floor used for random art work at times (it was empty when we visited)Parking is sufficient and there is toilet facilities
