40 Kilometer ride (about 25 miles) each way, takes you through the towns and bush-suburbs on this trail, then farmland, before the impressive forest areas, to arrive in the country town of Warburton with its pleasant river walk, stores, and eateries. Much of the ride is in the shade, and there is never a chance of being bored; at one point a Kangaroo ran along-side me as I rode. There are plenty of opportunities to stop for water, toilets or snacks as you ride near some towns and settlements; in this case you have to be prepared to leave the trail for half a Km or so.
What a lovely bush walk or bike or scooter or horse ride you can have on the Warburton Trail. Bring your dogs or/and children. Some money to spent at some little cafes on the way if you wish or pack a lunch and drink. Start at any of the many starting points. Go a short or a long way. A delightful day out on the edge of a big city.
I have walked this trail so many times - admittedly not in one hit - and it is very relaxing and an easy walk/ride. One thing to look out for is cyclists as they tend to use it as a training track for racing and if you are not careful, you can come around the corner and nearly be fair out! Apart from that, it is lovely and relaxing and peaceful
It's very shady, very long. Only problem there's a lack of toilets and hardly any places to buy drinks so make sure you take plenty supplies
I only rode a small section from Warburton to Junction Village and back but found the trail to very well maintained and easy to ride. The scenery is lovely as you pass through the back of farms and bush sections with the beautiful mountains as your backdrop. Good signs along the way and you can stop in either of the towns for coffees and food ect. A great family ride as its mostly flat
A great cycle path that goes through a large range of terrains and environments.Perfect as you can stop off on the way for coffee, etc.Fairly flat so great for everyone
I rode from Lilidayle to Yarra Jucntion and back i,e approx 63Km. Ride till Mt Wandin is up hill and down hill , specially near Mt Evelyn but there onwards it is relatively flat. Surface is even with hard packed gravel and there are few bumpy wooden bridges. The entire ride is scenic passing through forest and lush green paddocks. One thing really impressive about trail is that there are boards put up after every 500 meters giving the emergency number and the code to use along with it. Only disappointment was lack of sign posts, up till Seville there are sign posts signalling how much distance for next township but there were none after that. Also carry sufficient water as there are no taps to fill bottles on the way other than at cafes which might be distant away.
We started at the Warburton end as we stayed in Warburton overnight and rode to Seville and back. Really easy gradient and the hard packed gravel was smooth. Recent rains left the edges a bit mushy but it never effected the path. Very well maintained and I liked the fact that every 500 metres or so there was a sign with a number in case you got into trouble that you could call, quote the board number and someone will come to help. The Carriage Cafe at Seville was a nice touch but I loved the scenery and the old bridges. Copped 2 punctures along the way and still couldn't dampen the experience. Oh HELL YES we will ride this again.
Staying with relatives I found this trail by accident on early morning walk. Nice smooth trail with interesting scenery. I used it a couple of times including ten km walk and found easy to walk on and did a good fast time even though return uphill.
My adult son and I decided to use a cold Sunday to try this well know rail trail and we were not disappointed. Armed with a couple of hard-tail mountain bikes we set off from Wandin headed toward Warburton, the return distance measuring a tick over 56Kms. The surface, even at this time of year, was fine with occasional puddles but nothing unsuitable for really any bike except perhaps a road bike, although a little bit of front suspension was handy over the bumpy wooden bridges. Its basically flat but Strava recoded over 600 meters of rise over the journey and we didn't do the steepest part from Lilydale. We stopped at the excellent COG café for a coffee and muffin at Warburton and took a little over 3 hrs for the return trip. The views and surrounds were great and there are plenty of parking spots along the trail so you can lengthen or shorten the trip to your own taste. I will be doing it again soon.
Taking the Warburton Rail Trail walk from Mt Evelyn to Wandin Station and return (roughly 10kms round trip), I could not help but be impressed with the amount of engineering required in construction of the rail line to keep the little trains on a relatively flat gradient. Although the walk is largely downhill on the walk to Wandin, the roadway which follows the same path contains numerous 'serious' hills that would be difficult to walk. Along the way, the scenery is not spectacular in this section, but is is pleasant enough with rock cuttings, fern gullies and gum trees. You could make the walk in either direction, although the parking at the Wandin end is limited and there is no toilet at the old station platform. Wandin village shops are 350 meters further on, but public toilets are available here. The Mt Evelyn end of the section ends on the village itself, with several cafes and a public toilet. Parking is also easier at Mt Evelyn. This section could be done by walkers who have difficulty with uneven ground. Walkers should also be very careful crossing the Warburton Highway at the Wandin end as the traffic approaches at speed and there is no regulated crossing.
This trail has been an integral part of my family's recreation. As kids we'd have family bike rides along various sections and now as adults we join our extended family (cousins, uncles, etc) and friends to ride the whole thing a couple of times a year. Riding the whole length is a great way to spend active time with friends and family - it's beautiful and while most of the track is fairly flat, there are challenging sections at the lilydale end. So get a group together and enjoy one of Victoria's greatest recreational rides. If you haven't been to warburton, you'll love it when you get there!
Very scenic countryside route. We cycled from Warburton to Lilydale, one way (38km).Generally easy cycling, except the last 10km, which is a long slope approaching Mt Evelyn. For family, it'll be easier if you can start your ride in middle of the trail, as elevation is a mild "V" shape. We took around 4 hrs to complete, including lunch and crashes. :-P
The Warburton Rail trail is not just for bikes. It is a shared facility and is used by a great many walkers. There is easy access from multiple access points all the way along the trail from Lilydale to Warby. Some of the scenery is quite spectacular. The walks vary from open vistas to bushland settings. The more secluded walks have heaps of bird life, the odd wallaby and lots of other wildlife.
I have ridden the Lillydale to Warburton rail trail 3 times now and will return to ride it again and again in the future. As rail trails go it is certainly one of the best in Victoria.I start the ride early in the morning to catch the mist rolling down the valley off the nearby hills. What fresh crisp air and brilliant green countryside. Look out for the beautiful old gum trees in a number of sections of the track. The trail is well maintained and is suitable for all levels of fitness if you pick the flatter sections between Worri Yallock and Warburton. Any one of reasonable fitness should be able to tackle the trail both ways over a day.Coffee at the Cog Cafe at Warburton in a highlight but for good food try the Pantry in the main street of Warburton; very good food at a reasonable price. Friendly service to boot!
