I went to this zoo without great expectations. However, I was pleasantly surprised by this place. Do not expect this zoo to be like the San Antonio, Texas zoo which is huge. Good things come in small packages. You have a guided tour of the zoo. The tour is about 1 and a half hour. It has many animals not seen in other zoos in Ecuador. Many of the exhibits are behind big glass panels, so you can get really close to see the animals. Some of the animals not commonly seen in Ecuador are zebras, emus, and a single hump camel. Good place to visit if you are with little kids. Highly recommended.
We thought this would be a pretty small park and the local we went with remembered it as very small but it has obviously changed a lot and has plenty of animals including toucans, lots of monkeys, meerkats, tigers, jaguar, puma (panther), camel, zebra, crocodiles, lions bears and more! From downtown (near Malecon 2000) we were quoted $15 each way by a taxi arranged by our hostel and it is $6 entry per person. We were led round on a tour which I think might be compulsory but was in Spanish. I suspect the don't have an English speaking guide onsite but we didn't really need to be told anything, just see the animals! The tour took just under 2 hours and was well worth $6 :). It takes 20 minutes to get to the zoo from downtown and you can buy small snacks and drinks halfway through the tour.
This is an option to visit with the familiy. It is a local zoo that is outside the city of Guayaquil, about 20 minutes. The owners have over 20 years keeping and caring for animals of many species. Good option to spend a sunday morning. Not expensive.
I've already gone 3 times and about to embark on my fourth. It's not he most luxurious but that's not what the experience is about. They have so may varierty of animals; native exoctics and international. They even have a loose male peacock walking around(totally safe) that definitely lends itself for pictures and enriching your experience. It's a guided tour and incredibly informative at that; some details are even tear jerkers! Questions are always welcomed. The animals can be appreciated from very up-close(still safe) allowing your fotographs to be taken with very good quality. They also have the largest rat in the world which left me dumb-founded as well as the smallest monkey. They give you a recess to take a breather, sit, relax, eat, and use the bathroom. Recording is also not a problem. Definitely a place where a child can satisfy his curiosity to see, feel and hear the animals. That's why i keep coming back!
It is a zoo which began in the late 80's as a place for rescued wildlife (birds and animals found ill), in 2000 it became a zoo and has been a great place to visit since then.a link to the zoo http://www.zoologicoelpantanal.com/
