I'm not the biggest fan on snorkeling but I absolutely loved Kicker Rock (Leon Dormido). I went there a few times with friends and even going and just staying on the boat is worth it. It is quite a lovely spot and the water is relatively calm there. I will warn you I was stung by a jellyfish there but it really didn't hurt at all. Also if you go snorkeling there and want to go through the channel the boat will have to leave you for a little bit to get to the other side. If you are not a strong swimmer I would strongly suggest going with a strong swimmer.
There were many many sharks, a group of 3 eagle rays, turtles, cristal clear water, amazing steep rocks. When you swim in between the 2 giant rocks, it's just magical, an athmosphere that cannot be described in words... amazing, frightening, endless deep see beneath you. The best snorkeling trip we had on the Galapagos islands.
We visited Kicker Rock in February 2015 from our cruise on the simply wonderful "Beagle". The excitement was racked up even further because we sighted Bridie's Whales here too. This is a deep water dive and the currents are fairly swift, so make sure that you try out all your kit to ensure a good fit well beforehand - as anything that falls off here is going to sink way lower than you could dive to retrieve it. Ask your Zodiac or boat skipper to "read" the current in the narrow channel between the two rocks, and to put you in the water on the side which will enable you to swim with rather than against the flow. Be BOLD and you'll have the best swim of your life!I say this because this hunk of rock is way off-shore and the sides are deep and sheer so don't even think about where the bottom might be, and wait until you are in the water enjoying yourself before you ask whether there will be any sharks. The day we went we saw literally too many to count. Layers and layers of them, shark soup! Five kinds - Galapagos, Black tipped reef, White tipped reef, Whale sharks and Hammerheads. We also saw a large group of Manta Rays and lots of Stngrays and huge shoals of fish. This is where the deep water is fantastic - there is room for so much marine life - and you, without bumping into each other. Going through the gap is just awesome, sharing the space with so many huge and languid beasts making swimming against the current look effortless, then you snorkel around the rock, close to the wall where there are beautiful corals and colourful reef fish. It is simply stunning and a once in a lifetime experience not to be missed
We were a little nervous about going to kicker Rock as we are not the best of swimmers, but boy we are so glad we went snorkeling now.We were well looked after by the tour guide and with safety vests on took the plunge and it was the most fantastic experience. We saw Manta rays, white tipped sharks, hammerhead sharks, sea lions swimming underneath us looking up, turtles and many colourful fish. It was spectacular!
With over a thousand ocean dives I was awed over the marine life with so many Galapagos sharks, hammerhead sharks, eagle rays, sea lions and fish.
i was scuba diving at kicker rock lots of sharks (whit tip, black tip, galapagos), turtles and eagel ray's and a mola mola! great experience!! what an awesome day at kicker rock!i would highly recommend a trip to kicker rock for scuba diving or snorkeling
Suck it up and hope the guide was right about whitetip and hammerhead sharks! Not likely to attack humans! Not likely? M-m-m-m-m-m! Ah do it!
The beach which you can visit is the most stunning and breathtaking beach in the whole of the Galapagos Islands. My daughter complained about it before we went because she doesn't usually like beaches but even she said that she loved it more than anything. It is a great photographers spot (especially at sunset) and is a great places to get lost in for a few hours!
I've logged around 50 dives in my life in many different locations. The snorkeling tour to Kicker Rock stands out as the spot where I saw the most sea life. On the way out we encountered a school of 35 golden rays, Dolphins, and many others. The snorkeling at Kicker Rock was incredible...50 or more sharks , turtles , Rays etc...incredible !! Loved it !!
My wife and I snorkeled around the rock (more like a very small island) with a guide. In the cleft, where the rock has split, one can snorkel over sharks holding still in the current. The underwater sides of of the rock are covered with growths that provide environmal niches for a wide variety of sea life. The added attraction is the occasional sea lion swimming up along side or around you in almost a teasing manner.
We did a nice daytrip to Kicker Rock. First we passed to a arch through which we had great view on the rock formation. After we went to nearby beach with Iguanas, Boobies and sealions. And finally we could put on our diving gear to dive at the rock with sharks, rays and we saw a mola mola too. Nice day, lucky with the guide and surely an amazing location! For me place numero uno on Cristobal!
Don't miss this experience! We went snorkelling on a murky day and did not see as many things as we hoped to but it was still an exceptional experience! Though it wasn't perfectly clear we did see sharks (no hammerheads) sea turtles, schools of beautiful fish, and sea lions. The scenery alone was breathtaking. Tip: bring a wetsuit (our agency said it wasn't necessary but it was chilly after awhile).
For the snorkeling above swimming sharks, nowhere to land thus for experienced snorkelers or to snorkel with a lifejacket, go for it, once in a lifetime experience?Bring motion sickness pills just in case...
This must be read with a word of reserve. We got lucky, plain and simple. Kicker Rock is a spectacular place to be, regardless of the dive experience, but the dive set it apart for us. The scuba experiences vary here, but we happened to luck out. We saw virtually every animal on our wish list: hammerhead sharks swam above us while we were surrounded by over a hundred white tip, black tip, and Galapagos sharks, not to mention sea lions frolicking and feeding amongst the thousands of fish, sea turtles everywhere, all varieties if rays, and my favorite: a 40-50' diameter ball of Striped Selima (each about 6" long). I swam into the ball and had a National Geographic moment. The fish separated around my waving arms. The bubbles from my tank rose to create a chimney to the sun that had been completely darkened beforehand by the 500,000+ fish that shut out all light moments ago. We travelled with Charo Tours, a PADI dive shop with a professional approach, and the smooth sailing catamaran that provided plenty of room for suiting up and sharing lunch with other divers and the crew. I felt sorry for the snorkelers who were on the boat because they didn't see nearly all we saw, but either way, the location alone was worth it. This was the highlight of my three week Galapagos stay.
The best snorkeling tour on all the islands. Better than Túneles. Guaranteed Galapagos sharks and maybe hammerheads if you are lucky. Best thing we did when we were on the islands for two weeks.
