Overcrowded on the weekends and in every second someone tries to sell you something but apart from all that it's really beautiful, big waves, lovely warm water and awesome hot sand! A good bikini is ideal though coz the waves will rip it off of you! I wish I was there again!
What is there to say that hasn't been said already, relax enjoy and take in everything that a good beach can offer.
The best part of the beach is that you don't have to bring anything to it. When you arrive there are chair, drink, bathing suit and food vendors that come to you. Prices are very reasonable and the merchandise and food is very good. Don't get the caipirinha unless you watch them make it and if you must always choose the vodka version with pineapple it's much more refreshing, in my opinion. Posto-9 use to have a steak sammie that was to die for but they're no longer there. However, Posto-9 is still the sexiest post of the beach. Actually the whole country is pretty sexy. Water is a bit rough and right where Ipanema meets Copacabana there is a place to paddle board. In closing the beach is amazing and I know why Rio de Janeiro has the best beaches in the world.
We do have a mixed review of Ipanema Beach. First the positives. This beach is absolutely beautiful, one of the nicest I've seen. When we were there the water was warm. The sand is soft, and the scenery is gorgeous. Here are the drawbacks. The reports about theft are real. We nearly had our travel bag stolen. A local individual showed my husband where the thief had stashed it otherwise it would have been gone. Fortunately we heeded the advice of the blogs and didn't have anything of value in the bag, just a few reals, sunscreen, etc. The bummer of it was that one of our party of 4 always had to stay on the beach to watch our stuff. Our attention was diverted for a second when a large wave sent us scrambling. That quickly, the thief grabbed our bag. If you are going there, take this threat seriously and leave all valuables in the hotel safe. Second, we were constantly approached by people trying to sell us stuff. In fairness when we told them "no", they left immediately, but it was so prevalent that it got to be annoying. Third, the undertow was the worst that I've ever experienced, so be careful. 4th be sure to take small bills because if you do want to buy a water, etc. they can't make change. 5th I couldn't believe how many people just left their trash on the beach. I was all cleaned up in the morning, but I did see trash being taken out by the surf, which is a real bummer. 6th We were there on a Saturday. Many times throughout the day military and police helicopters flew by at a low altitude. A man with a machine gun was sitting at the open door each time. We found that to be a little unsettling. It really is too bad that the authorities can't get a handle on the crime as it is a beautiful place. I wouldn't tell another person not to go, but I would tell them to proceed with caution. For me, our one experience will be enough for me.
I visit Rio annually and this is my favorite. Whether you're a tourist or a local, the vibe is cool and the view is the best. Dois Irmaos is my favorite landmark in the city, and the view is beautiful from here. Go far enough down on the beach away from the edge where Arpoador connects Ipanema to Copacabana, and you'll find yourself amongst locals, still having access to the vendors passing by with matte, Globo, queijo coalho, sandwiches, & of course cangas. It's a touristy beach but it's still the most beautiful of the world in my eyes thanks to the location & awesome people there. My things have always been safe left on the sand while I'm in the water, too.
We stayed in Ipanema Beach because we kept hearing Copa was a bit dirty... We were not disappointed! Our apartment was two blocks from the beach close to Post 8. The beach was a little crowded, but if you stop at one of the many stands on the beach and pay for an umbrella and/or chair they will find a spot for you in their section. They will also make you drinks and some even have wifi! All of it was VERY inexpensive, for comparison we paid the equivalent of 3.50 USD for an umbrella. In places like Miami you can easily pay 20 dollars for a chair. It was great atmosphere on the beach and most people were extremely nice. DONT BRING VALUABLES... If you need to bring someone like a phone or camera then make sure someone is always at your spot watching your things. We brought a small bag with some money, we were a big group so there were always some of us at our spot. The waves were fun, but rough at times. It's a workout! Overall awesome experience!
I've been in many beaches and this is an iconic place. Lots of vendors walking around you and nice avenue to access to it. Its sand it's so clean respect others and I understand why Garota de Ipanema's took a sunbath there. I carried a handful of this iconic sand with me ;-)
Went to this beach as copacabana was a bit dirty. This is a nice beach but the waves are big so if you're not a strong swimmer, don't go in too deep. The beach was clean and there was always someone selling food and drinks. You can also view the sunset from this beach if you stay long enough. The water wasn't cold at all. Nice beach
