It was a very good place to be, a great starting point for some hiking opportunities. I usually go there to have a good relaxing visit. The monastery is in the deep mountain and the views are perfect. You could even have a walk in the near forests, as well as visit the Ivan Rilski cave. If you are into climbing there are a couple of climbing areas there that you could visit, but you must go with some person that knows the exact locations.

If you choose only one place to visit in Bulgaria, it must be Rila :Monastery of Sv.Jovan (Ivan) Rilski from 10 th century. With it's rich history, amazing setting (with the snow covered mountains aroud ) and the fact that it is a working monastery it is one of the most unbelivable places i have visited not only in Balkans!Try to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive. You can sleep in the monastery but we chose a more comfortable option in the town of Rila and took the 7.00 am bus to the monastery. There is another bus at around 15 pm to take you back or you can hitchike as we did and it worked well. If you follow the stream around the monastery and go down the small path you'll come to the little cementary where some of the monks were buried.Outside the monastery stands an old house where they sell excellent fried dough and home made yougurt, famous for that region. Don't miss it- it's a feast!

the monastery is at the end of a long winding road but in a beautiful wooded mountain setting. The icons, and wall murals/paintings are truly superb, this building richly deserves its `world heritage status`, its still a working monastery and even offers rental rooms to independent travellers., its well worth the effort to get there, definitely a `must see`

It is one of the places where you feel you are being far from all the civilization, crowd, far from the world. Up in the mountains, cowered in snow, half-frozen creek. Something spectacular. Then you look at the monastery and cannot believe that you are in such a beautiful place. It WAS freezing, but you start ignoring it after a while :)

there is a rather long ride from Sofia to Rila (cca 2 hours) but the last half of the ride is through the mountains and small villages so it's interesting. Everything was covered in snow so we had a feeling like traveling through winter wonderland - the ride was well worth it. When we arrived to Rila Monastery we all loved it. It is rather small but really beatiful place with positive and calming atmosphere. There are two restaurants outside beside the Monastery. We ate in the one on the left and loved it. I believe that Rila Monastery is a place to visit (just check the calendar since this is a famous pilgrims place and it could happen it is crowded due to some holiday..) I am happy that I had a chance to visit it.

Unless you are in a monastery tour visit, this place it can be considered to be a little out of the path for the regular tourist. Once there you will enjoy it.

Gem ! This monastery is such a beautiful place ! Its location is incredible, high in the mountains ,amazing views, en route of a 25-30 km picturesque steep gorge, with thousands trees everywhere. The muesem is very interesting. Don't forget to visit the bakery. I visited on Christmas and I saw this place in his snow covered edition.Out of this world !!!

If visiting the Rila Monastery, don't forget to go through the back gate and find the tiny Mekitci Shop. These wafers of deliciousness are best served hot and covered with icing sugar. Happiness in every scrumptious morsel, this is the closest you will get to a Beaver Tail on this side of the Atlantic! Yum!

Beautiful, well maintained monastery (one of the finest and most important of the Balkans), immersed in a charming valley. We visited it on a bright sunny day after a heavy snow fall, which added to the charm.

Monastery is very nice and full of history. Nice morning or late evening to visit to avoid the crowds of tourists. Then place and departments also worthwhile to hear. You can feel the beauty and serenity of the monastery. It's good to eat beans on a neighboring restaurant. Good were the cakes in the adjoining bakery.

If you are interested in the history of figurative painting and have never thought about going to Bulgaria, this Monastery alone is worth buying a ticket, and getting on a plane! Inside and out it is covered with outstanding works of art. Not so easy to get to, but well worth the effort.
