Trakoscan castle is part of the croatian history, that you have to visit if you are travelling in that part of the country. It is placed on a hill and it has the most beautiful view over the forest park with the lake. The ticket price, as i remember was 4 euros, but you get discount if you are a student, and if you are with children.

It is thought that in the distant past the castle on the rocky peak of the hill looked amazingly like a dragon, and that the name was formed from drako (derived from draco, Latin for dragon), and stayn (German stein or stone). It is a cultural estate, a protected historical site consisting of the castle, the buildings below the castle, the gardens an the forested park with a lake.

We visited Trakoscan Castle as part of the Back-Roads Touring Co “Flavours of Northern Croatia & Slovenia” tour. It’s an impressive 13th century castle on top a hill and it dominates the surrounding valleys. The views from the ramparts are spectacular and every room is full of history in the form of furniture, costumes, paintings and photographs. The armoury and kitchen displays are particularly good. Well worth a visit and the entry fee.

A must see historic place! The ambiance of the passed centuries in almost a fairy tale surroundings. I was astonished and would recommend it to all who visit that part of Croatia.

Very informative, stories written in both english and croatian and a great place to learn about local history which goes back centuries.Beautiful scenery and views of the area and a wonderful little bar/tavern right on the lake below the castle. Reasonable admission as well. Recommended!

it is indeed nice place for walking, but gastronomical offer is not so good. If you wish to have decent coffe, it is more like you are back in 16th century.........

Trakošćan castle is one of the best preserved castles in Croatia, and a breathtaking sight to visit and remember.Castle is placed on a small hill with medieval type of fortification, and next to a lake in Hrvatsko Zagorje region, known for green hills and happy people. It was a residence of famous noble family Drašković. The family is responsible for all the heritage in the castle (old furniture, paintings, vast collection of medieval weapons and etc.) witch takes you to the past times and shows the way of living back then. The lake is next to castle and lovely English garden. There are two places to eat and drink but my recommendation is one on the lake with nice view and more peaceful then the first one located in front of the castle.Lots and lots of Croatian history can be explained there so it is most certain the best place to see in Zagorje if you are interested in history of Europe. Lots of styles from different periods on one place. Must see.

The most beautifull castle in Croatia, well preserved and well kept. Situated in the northern part of Hrvatsko Zagorje region. It originates from the Burg- a defense tower built on the hill to controll the borders and roads back in 13th century. Renovated few times, enlarged by itsl owner framily Draskovic who lived there from 17th century till the end of the World War II.Nowadays it still keeps the weapon collection , music salon with an old piano, restored and well presented rooms that shows the cultural heritage of its owners, and of the high society of those times. Daily opened from 9 till 18:00 also sundays. At the bottom of the hill there is a beatifull park and a lake.

We have to say thank you so much to people from "Hostel Party" in Zagreb for organizing us this trip to Trakoscan castle. They didn't have this in their tours offer, but still made us best deals and organized whole trip. And some trip it was. So much beautiful sights we've visited, and pictures we took. U must visit!

We meandered along the country lanes from Krapinske Toplice and were greeted by this beautiful castle on top of a hill, surrounded by huge, majestic trees. It was quite a steep walk up but the views were worth it and grandmothers did it! We paid a modest admission fee and were given information for reference. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience, from the dungeons to the tower and back down to the kitchen. We were really impressed with all, there was on display. Portraits, furniture, memorabilia and a startling display of armour and weapons from medieval times. The best thing is being able to examine everything at your leisure, again no crowds... The castle has been restored in all it's glory and is very impressive, a credit to Croatian Tourism. The gardens surrounding the castle are also worth exploring and perhaps a jaunt on the lake on a paddle boat- we chose instead to,watch others while we sipped our coffee from the banks. Not to be missed.

This is a really nice place. The surroundings are nice to walk (the park around the castle). the castle itself has several floors and each of the rooms is left decorated in a different style. One of the rare castles in Croatia that is restored and opened to the public. A must see!

Visit this beautiful castle is a real pleasure Castle is very nice and well maintained inside and out and you will surely spend wonderful moments. I recommend a visit in the spring and summer because then you can stroll and enjoy the beauty of the surrounding nature trail.

We went on Christmas Day because most things in Zagreb were closed. It is over an hour drive from Zagreb. They do have nice collections of furnishings and weapons, but the tower was closed when we were there so we really didn't see any stunning views. Walking the grounds may be an option on a nicer day, but it was overcast and cool and we decided to head back to Zagreb after just an hour visit. Not recommended if you have any mobility issues as it is a good walk up to the castle on a gravel path.

Just one hour north of Zagreb--and worth the drive. The castle is nicely restored with furnishings and many open rooms for viewing. The grounds, including a large lake and walking path around it, are simply gorgeous. The audio guide is very informative about the castle and its rooms. Perhaps the best part is that very few visitors tour the castle, so it is a peaceful experience. We highly recommend this as a lovely day trip.
