It was cold in the church but the experience was very worthwhile. We were in a very highly decorated high ceilinged church for about 70 minutes listening to a string orchestra and soprano. Our only disappointment was that the organ was only in one piece.I am hoping to return to climb the tower.
It took 50 years to build this building, that includes a Renaissance-style coupole. There is a mosaic dome and panels illustrating the life ofKing IstvaN.
Really nice building. worth going to look. it i in the centre of Bp so you have no travel costs getting there.
I was on the fastest ever trip to Budapest and needed to find the Post Office. Right next to the Basilica, I was told, so off I rushed. I have to confess that I was preoccupied with stamps, catching my flight, last minute packing and so was unprepared for the effect of the scale of the Basilica. It is vast and very, very beautiful. It was early and so I could not see it in detail. Do not do what I did, make sure that you visit. By the way, the PO was great and so well organised!
Buy a ticket, walk through, take your time. As in all travel, read some of the history of Budapest a you will enjoy it more. The views are stupendous.
You cannot travel to Budapest and not visit St Stephens Basilica. It dominates the central area of Pest. It has great historical significance to the Hungarians. You pay a donation of 200 HUF to enter the building - roughly 50p. The architecture and history of the building is fascinating.
The interior is beautifully ornate. I was amazed to see the paintings covering all the walls. There is a small fee, but well worth the price.
We chanced upon the Basilica at sunset. A service was about to begin so we didn't stay too long, but it was long enough to take in such a beautiful surroundings.
This is the largest church in Budapest. Saint Istvan was Hungary's first Christian king. The basilica is very ornate and beautiful. We pre booked an organ concert and it was simply incredible. Miklos Teleki was the organist who graduated from the Liszt Academy of Music. The soloist sang Ave Maria and it was absolutely glorious. The performance lasted 70 minutes and I hated to have it be over. Pieces from Mozart, Vivaldi, Liszt, Schubert, Bach, and Schumann were performed. With the backdrop of the ornate altar and the marvelous music, it was an evening to remember for a long time.
St. Stephen's Basilica towers above the Budapest skyline from all sides. Walking straight up from the Danube and you arrive at the very impressive front of the Basilica. There were no crowds when I was there and I walked straight in. It is a Catholic Church that has daily Mass and various other religious ceremonies. It was a voluntary donation at the entrance to the inner Basilica and a mandatory donation to climb up to the dome (about 2 euro). The inside is spectacular with highly ornate stained glass and a very decorative organ. I was fortunate enough to witness the singing of local children in preparation for their First Holy Communion. It truly continued the wonderful tradition of music in Hungary and was just magical. After climbing to the top of the dome, the view over Budapest was great, but there was quite a haze the day I was there. It was the inside of the Basilica that really did it for me. Wonderful.
