I have visited Tokaj region several times during the past 10 years. Visited many old timer cellars and newly build vinerys. The quality, from the dry easy drinking Muscat wines thrue the terroir driven high quality dry Furmint to the well deserved exceptional Aszu wines, are rising year after year. The best vinemakers are SZEPSY, DEMETER ZOLTAN, HOMONNA, already reached international recognition. The best internationaly owned vinearys having fantastic facilities worth to visit ( Oremus, Disznoko, Hetszolo, Dereszla, Degenfeld ) are the bigest. The whole region is offering so much entertainement to the wine lovers. This is a MUST see to all. Highly recomended by a simple sommelier, myself!

To an oenophile, this is Mecca. The unique wines produced here are not found anywhere else. It is the 'terroir' that brings us here. The legendary Aszu sweet wines were a large part of what had brought me to this corner of Hungary. The city is friendly and wine tours can be arranged from America online. I prefer to do barrel tastings here as many winemakers offer them at reasonable rates. (I took 12 family members to a 3-hour tasting in an underground cellar, for $160!...we know what that would cost back home, right?)Many fine restaurants here for food, but I prefer to rent a villa for a few nights. It feels good to relax among the locals. I have rented this place a few times, and have always been impressed.http://www.tripadvisor.ca/Hotel_Review-g2151231-d2465314-Reviews-Szent_Imre_Vendeghaz-Tolcsva_Borsod_Abauj_Zemplen_County_Northern_Hungary.htmlThe owner of the above rental, Ava, can help you arrange barrel tastings for your party. She is awesome! Enjoy!

At first I didn't think I would enjoy the village of Tokaj very much, but I was sorry we didn't stay longer. There's plenty to see and do including fishing in the Tisa and shopping at Kinai Bot -- the Chinese Store. The restaurants are great and there is a new out door theatre which hosts world class performances. Next time I'm back in Hungary in this pristine and delightful place, I'll stay longer. Oh, there is wine and townsfolk are friendly and quiet.

I totally agree with opinions that this is a great experience not only enological.Of course wine is the main issue- a wide variety of white wines Tokaj is famous of, with its protagonista Tokaj Aszu, which is an excellent sweet white wine. Fall is the best time to visit, mild hilly landscape in full autumn colour palette, a joy for eyes. Great food and reasonable prices and kind people. Not to mention of nice hotels and thermal baths. Grat idea for a short trip.

So many vineyards, cellars and places for wine tasting. And beautiful autumn landscapes, open-hearted and welcoming people and good food at reasonable prices. Good for few days stay and enjoying the Hungarian countryside.

This is probably Hungary's most famous wine region, and not without reason. The environment, the rivers and mountains are beautiful with a little bit of wildness. Okay. That's only for the mountains, the rivers are perfectly peaceful. :)In the wide selection of white wines everyone can find what they like, and many restaurants provide variously prepared fish to go with the wine. Those who like canoeing or kayaking can also have an incredible experience in the small branches of Bodrog river, or take a tour on the Tisza river.I have been there many times myself, I would say that the best choice is to go outdoors during the day and to wine-tasting at the evening. The best thing in this area (Tokaj, specifically) that both backpackers and those who look for more comfort can find places to sleep at and go to.

We stayed several nights in the Vasko Panzio Borpince in the center of Tokaj. It was pretty rustic and there were some private parties and wine events that went on late into the night, but the owner/host was charming and his wines delicious. He even picked us up at the train station during a rainstorm and also got us back there for an early departure to Romania. Now THAT is service! Charming and walkable town and many photo ops and interesting shops, one of which is owned by our host. Highly recommended for a few days to chill out and experience Tokaj wines.

We didn't have an intention of staying in Tokaj. We were driving through this town on our way to Debrecen from Slovakia. The town seemed so beautiful and romantic that we decided to stay there on our way back. Staying in Tokaj was one of the best of all out trip. We stayed in a guesthouse named Bone Vendeghaz es Borozo. I couldn't find it on TripAdvisor, so I guess it's no here, but it's absolutely amazing. Run by great, welcoming and nice people. They have a wine cellar and offer wine tasting, too. Tokaj is a small, beautiful town with narrow streets reminding of romantic movies, small cafes and restaurants with delicious food. I couldn't find a better place to celebrate my birthday :)

We visited the Vivamus wine cellar in early June, 2014. The initial greeting with liquer was wonderfully gracious. The cellars themselves are amazing, albeit a bit scary as they were all underground with draping/hanging mold everywhere (apparently gives the wine its special flavor), and many of the overhead lights did not work. Thank goodness for cell phones! At the end of the tour, we were provided a wonderful meal of meat and cheese baked into a huge wheel of bread. Then came the wine tasting! They took us from the dryer wines (my favorite) to the sweeter (and more expensive) wines, that take 9-12 baskets of grapes just to make one bottle. The evening was wonderful for the entire family. Just make sure you have a designated driver!

Loved the wine - and this is the only white wine I have ever loved. You can compare wines of different ages.

This place is not for weight watchers! The local food is amazing and the place has its own quirkiness. My family is from this place and hope to retire here as well.Good for those who love wine, food and lover touring around or up the mountain, might worth using bicycle. The view is amazing...its a challenge to walk up-approx. 2 hours-but worth the view.Take lots of water with you as there is nothing on the top.The nature is amazing also. The little town down there has lots of restaurants and local shops offering gifts and wine, worth trying them, specially the cakes.

One of my favorite places in Europe with very special wines. This is one of the UNESCO World heritage sites. The cultural landscape of Tokaj graphically demonstrates the long tradition of wine production in this region of low hills and river valleys. Elegantly built and intensely flavorful, it's a simply beautiful wine with a long finish. Tokaji Aszu aromas always bring me back to this wonderful place in Magyarország and its great people.
