This lake is a wonderful area to explore, especially in autumn, when the colours on display are amazing. During the summer, divers from the local society can be seen from the shore. A path goes round the entire lake (allow 90 minutes to two hours) and is easy for those of any age. We have negotiated the circuit several times with a push chair and elderly relatives. You can take a diversion mid-way and head off for the smaller lakes at the foot of the adjacent glacier. Parking may entail a steep walk from the car park but it is worth it! As the walk can take a couple of hours make sure you check the local weather beforehand. Storms can build up very quickly in summer and there are only a couple of tunnels to take refuge in if a big storm arrives.Restaurant at the end of the lake along with a child's area which has an interactive working model that explains how the lake and dam help control the waters down the valley.

This lake is a charm! The lake itself, its surroundings, the Dachstein mountains over it - all is natures best. After you park the car by the cable car entrance you have several choices - go over the Vorderer lake in a round trip; pass the Vorderer lake and continue to Hinterer lake (will take another 1.5 hours at least); just sit there and enjoy the view; go up the cable car and take a hike down (about 1.5 hours at least, not 1 as they claim). A lot of hiking routes there as well.Totally must in this area, one of the best there.

We are a family of five. Parents and three teenage boys. The teenagers do not really like nature walks, but after Abtnao slides in the mountains, we continued to Lake Gosao. The GPS is not just because the exact area, but with a bit of intuition and experience we got, and it was worth every minute and every Euro ... Amazing wide lake in front of the opposite hillside. Calm water and clean air with pleasant scents of nature. At some point we went down to the water line. We were not prepared to enter the water or swim but we fed the ducks leftover bread and cookies ... After walking for half an hour, and the kids fed up because we wanted to continue to Hallstatt, we decided to finish. If we only parents, there is no doubt that we spend more time there ...

This town was surrounded by mountains and it basically sits in a valley. What can I say, the environment is breathtaking for me, it reminds me of those scene in Sounds of Music. The houses were so meticulous with beautiful, colorful paints on them and the neatly arranged flowers hanging. It's how I imagine villages in Europe should be I suppose.

You must visit this beautiful lake if you are around salzburg or on your way to Hallstatt. Can be easily reached by a small drive. Try to be there in the early morning to enjoy the magnificient views of the crystal clear lake. If you are lucky you will see the reflections of the mountains on the lake and the clear view of the glaciers as well. It can be awe inspiring!. We stopped here on our way to Hallstatt and had only an hour to spend. But i highly suggest to spend more time even trying to hike to the nearby mountain or even the glacier. I bet it would be amazing! it is a hidden gem.

We have been here last weekend with friends from Wiscon, they were simply stunned by the beauty of the area. We came here to hike up from the lakes to the Adamekhütte, an Alpine hut right beneath the Dachstein glacer. Wonderful! First we hiked past the first lake to the second; there we had a break and jumped into the crystalclear water. Very refreshing and entertaining, too, because those little fish soon discovered our feet and started picking at them, like those doctor fish... nearby cattle were grazing, here is an Alm where you can also get fresh milk, drinks and food. From here we ascended to the hut at 2200m, it took us over 3 hours to get there; at the end we still had some small snow fields to cross. Luckily the weather was mainly sunny so we had great views; in the evening clouds arose but cleared up again. The hut looks down to the lakes deep below and around you are snow fields, ice and very steep mountains. The hut is renovated and very comfortable for an Alpine hut. The staff was very friendly, we took the half-board, played cards in the evening and swapped stories with other hikers. There is no hit water for showers, of course, so the shower was very brief; I have never seen my girls return so fast :)A great weekend, and for our guests a life-time experience.

Set deep in the Salzkammergut is this beautiful lake at the end of a long valley. Our first glimpse took us a little by surprise as the lake only looked half full. Instead of a shimmering face of water having excellent reflections, it looked rather empty and sad. We got used to it eventually it was just not what we anticipated. The mountains surrounding the lake were quite dramatic and more snow covered the deeper into the range you got. The path that circuits the lake takes about an hour and a half and was a good level track. It offers excellent views and the mountain scenes did begin to reflect in the lakes surface. The walking track was complimented by various informative signs discussing power generation from hydro as this lake turned out to be part of the hydro scheme. You can connect from here onto longer hikes to the Dachstein mountain range. It was a lovely quiet walk and you felt at one with nature.

We stopped here on our way to Hallstat and WOW, I'm so glad we did. The weather was beautiful and it was early in the morning, before any crowds. The restaurant just opened, so we sat outside, had a cup of coffee and just admired the view. It was so magnificent and beautiful and peaceful. Ton of snow still on the back mountain. I didn't want to leave, and someday I really want to come back and walk/bike around that lake.

I took a bus to the Gosausee from Bad Ischl, the road was very beautiful, the village of Gosau itself was amazing. I took a long walk along the lake, it was amazing, thick forests, trails, nice colors on the lake, mountains everywhere, I would rate it very high among all alpine lakes. Even if its raining, and you cant go up the skilift, do not worry, a walk along the lake will be great.

A mecca for bushwalkers and lake scuba divers, worth a visit for the view and the very traditional restaurant for a warming coffee and cake. Souvenirs can be purchased here also.

Visited this lovely lake after a bit of a drive from Salzburg to reach Gossau and it is a further 5 kms from Gossau village.Visited in late october hence the water of the lake looked dark and a bit gloomy as the lake is hedged in by all sides by mountains.I am sure that on a sunny day,it would be a great place to visit.I cannot comment on the cable car as it was closed.
