We have had a pleasant holiday in St. Wolfgang, Salzkammergut, Austria. One of our intended "activities" has been "walking in the woods". This treck is exactly what we needed, not too difficult bu also not completely flat, with stop-sites with wonderful views, an old church to visit and pleasant shadowed alleys. It starts near Hotel Peter in St. Wolfgang and ends in Ried but there are several points where one can finish the walk and return to town.
wow from St Wolfgang a walk along the lake then you go through paddocks and into the forest, and you begin to climb and continue going up up up some very steep climbs not sure how long it should take we took our time the locals were passing us with ease, we reached the pilgrims church and I enjoyed a well deserved rest, continuing on to St Gilgen a short distance of further climb and then we headed down into the pretty village of St Gilgen Mozarts mother lived there and her house is right by the lake, nice place to visit.
One of my favourite walks in the area. There are 2 ways to approach this walk from St Giligen or St Wolfgang. There are ship stations at both ends. I favour the classic way, starting at the Church in the centre of St Wolfgang. It takes about 1 hour along the side of the lake to the start of the steep climb , to a wonderful green clearing with the pilgims church clinging to the side of the clif. Ring the bell and you are sure to return one day. Its steep on the way down , some people might require waking sticks. There is a wooden hut at the bottom, on the lakeside, run by a very friednly lady that sells drinks and ice cream etc. It's good for a rest before the walk to St Gilgen alond the side of the lake, which takes just under 1 hour. Then stop in St Gilgen for a coffe and a cake or a beer, and get the ship back to St Wolfgang. A wonderful walk.
I am a novice walker and was a little concerned how steep this walk was going to be. Yes it is steep! but when you reach the church at Falkenstein it provides a wonderful sense of achievement and peace. We were told we must ring the bell for good luck, which we duly did. The route is clearly marked all the way through to St Gilgen you can stop at Furberg for refreshment. Looking forward to returning to St Wolfgang.
Great walk from St Wolfgang to St Gilgen initially along the lake foreshore and then through the forest. Religious wayside stops with information along the way is nice and there is a chapel at the top built partially into a cliff grotto. Bit of a climb either side of the walk which will test your fitness.A must do when in the area and you can get the ferry back to your starting point.
nice walk, when clear of the trees, wonderful views across wolfgangsee,on our trip, black squirrels abounded.
We walked from St Gilgen along the side of the lake. We had been told it was steep but we were both tested. It is worth the work as the church at the top is very picturesque. We walked to St Wolfgang found it a little too touristy for our liking so we caught the boat bak
The trail is long, wide and well maintained. To do the station of the cross hike, hikers need to start from St. Gilgen. Hiking along the lake, hikers will start to climb up the trail before reaching the church of St. Wolfgang. Continue hiking to St. Wolfgang after reaching the church, hikers will encounter stepper trail before descending into open grassland. A leisurely hike along the trail will take 3 hours. But hikers can cut the trip short in either direction by taking the boat that makes a couple of stops along the hiking trail between St Wolfgang and St Gilgen. Don’t forget to go into the church and ring the church bell!
This is the only way to walk from St Wolfgang to St Gillgen. It entails a walk thro the woods and is well signposted and marked with "Stations of the Cross". There is one steep part (half hour steady uphill)and takes about 4 hours but is well worth it. You can catch a bus back in the winter or a ferry in the summer
My wife and I intended to have a short stroll from St Wolfgang but ended up walking all the way to St Gilgen. Because we had not planned to walk as far my wife was wearing sandals and I was wearing normal shoes. Although the path was very steep and rugged in parts we had no trouble. We had a break in Furburg at the restaurant (fish soup was delicious) and then continued on our walk. The scenery was magnificent and, because the weather was pleasant, it was a very enjoyable experience.Caught the ferry back to St Wolfgang.
The walk will take approx 4 hours - you will be so tired when you finally reach St Gilgen but the ferry boat will be there to sail you back to St Wolfgang.
We decided to do the walk on a pretty grotty, wet day and still enjoyed it.We were staying in St Wolfgang, so took the boat to St Gilgen. The walk was very well signposted but we did come across a problem as the lakeside footpath was closed due to work being carried out. This meant rejoining the road and then dropping back down further along and then heading over the Falkenstein. Saw so many brightly coloured fire salamanders crossing our tracks, which was an added bonus.
A very lovely walk, but you need walking boots and sticks. The walk is very steep and in parts difficult but you are rewarded with excellent views. At the top there is a church if you ring the bell 3 times then you can make a wish! Takes approx 2-3hrs we walked it from st gilgen to st Wolfgang
A moderately challenging walk which is quite easy until you approach the Falkenstein rock.We started from St Wolfgang and stopped for a lunch break in the excellent hotel in Furberg. From there it is an easy walk to St Gilgen and a relaxing boat ride back to St Wolfgang, unless you are a super fit person who wants to walk back. By the way dont forget to visit the little church behind the Falkenstein rock and ring the bell which supposedly signifies good luck.A very enjoyable walk for all.
From St Wolfgang to St Gilgen via Fuerberg; begins with gentle climb through meadows before heading up on clear path through woodland. The Falkenstein chapel marks the mid point to Fuerberg - followed by a level stroll into St Gilgen. Catch the boat back from from Fuerberg or St Gilgen. Lovely walk with benches along the way to sit & catch your breath!
