Located on the west of the Peloponnese, this castle offers an impressive view of the small Golf of Navarino, and overlooks the small fishing village of Pylos. Though the latter possesses the charm of small greek towns, the castle definitely remains the only attraction if you don't have much time. The citadel and its battlements will appeal to people interested in history; unfortunately, there aren't a lot of information panels, so you had better read from your own book if you want to understand this castle's importance in the history of Greece. The location and the view are superb.

The New Castle of Pilos (Neokastro) dominates the southern approach to the Navarino Golf.The promenade along the walls offers breathtaking views to the Navarino Golf and to the Pilos town.Inside there is an art museum.Included in the entry price is a slide show that explains and illustrates the famous naval battle of Navarino, where the defeat of the Turkish fleet cemented the Greek independence.

Het kasteel van Pylos (het vroegere Navarino) bewaakt de toegang tot de baai van Navarino, waar de laatste zeeslag plaatsvond die uiteindelijk leidde tot de Griekse onafhankelijkheid. Het loont de moeite om de wandeling te maken op de burchtmuren. Je hebt een prachtig uitzicht over de baai van Navarino en het eiland Sfaktiria dat bijna de hele baai afschermt van open zee. In een kamer in het centrale deel wordt een animatiefilm vertoond die de zeeslag bij Navarino situeert en beschrijft op schermen rondom de hele kamer, alsof men zelf op een schip zit.
