We' ve found happy train by accident. It was great to find out that the guide speaks Polish. She encouraged us to go to the village up in the mountains. The village is amazing with lovely architecture, nice people and breathtaking views.
We took the shorter ride to a destination with a 10 minute stopover for an ice cream cup. We and the kids had a very good time.
Lovely scenic coastal route from Elounda to Plaka on the appropriately named happy train. Plaka is well worth a visit for its gift shops and restaurants and the views are yo die for. Locals and tourists alike make a point of waving to those on board. Hard not to smile on board and reasonably priced too.
An opportunity to get up into the little villages overlooking Elounda and Spinalonga entertained by Ziggy with his facts and little anecdotes. This stopped long enough to see the old olive oil press and a drop of raki and passed the set of The Island on the way back. All in all beautiful scenery, entertaining, good commentary, good fun, a chance to chat with other people at the stops and a nice afternoon out and good value for what was about a 3 hour trip
My wife and I loved the happy train! As the other reviews state, yes it is more expensive than the taxi and essentially drives up the road then back again. However, this doesn't take into account the tour guide or the experience. It's a relaxed way to travel and in a hot area provides some nice needed rest with a chance to look out across the bay. Ziggy is a font of information and will give great Elounda tips as well as imparting various knowledge he has accrued over the years!
We went for the mountain lunchtime excursion. Stunning views with frequent photo stops during the steep climb away from Plaka and up the mountain. Good lunch at the taverna in the village, the Tzatsiki was excellent and the Mykonos was cold. The whole trip was about 3 hours. The trip was €15 each and well worth it. The female guide was knowledgable and spoke good english. A good lunchtime trip. There is however a bit of a steep incline during the visit to the water storage system, however you can miss this bit out if you want.
A trip through Plaka and up to mountain village to see a church and have a nibble and raki at a bar, chance to purchase drinks and food. Best part was views of bay and Spinalonga and a leisurely 3 hour diversion.
The little train trip was good value, very informative and a relaxing alternative during the holiday. The run up to the mountains giving alternative social views as well as great geography. Try it !
Nice ride. Its a nice way to see the village and the area. Happy train starts from the port of Elounda.
Oh dear chose the blue train which kept breaking down, or to be more specific stopping for a reason were not given an explanation for. I can tell you however we passengers were subjected to thick black smoke from the engine and had to stop on more than several occasions coming out of Plaka on the steep hill. Finally made it to the top and had an excellent lunch. Worth the money and guide very informative
Expensive. One third of the price or less for a taxi. Ten minutes in Plaka whilst the train turned around - not worth it.
We took the Happy Train from Ag Nik. It was 35 mins around the town but not that interesting really. Cost 9 euros each.
Fantastic views, loved the church visit. Made a nice change to go somewhere different. Guide was fantastic
Lots of good information, the tour guide was great and we met some really nice people during the trip.
A lovely trip if first time doing it. The scenery is spectacular and loads of photo opportunities. Last year we visited the olive oil making factory and was a lot more interesting. This has now changed and I don't feel as good as last years trip.
