My Husband and I spend 3 glorious days on the beautiful island of Santorini while Island hopping in Greece. We booked an all day sailing trip at one of the the travel agents in Thira town and it ended up being one of the best memories we have of staying on Santorini. The rustic ( and kind of cheesy) "sailboat" takes you from the old port in Thira to the volcano which you hike up. Its really not that hard of a hike we went up in flip flops and I was wearing a cover-up dress. The pebbley like volcano rocks are hot and dusty so wearing sneakers wouldn't be a horrible idea.....After we left the volcano we got back on the boat and sailed around to the natural hot springs. The water is luke warm and red from the copper levels (I think) in the water. So be advised DO NOT WEAR A WHITE SWIM SUIT OR IT WILL BECOME RED. After that we stopped at the island of Thirissa which is the cutest little island. It has a couple of restaurants that you can grab a bite to eat at. After that we got off at IA (Oia) and rode donkey's up the side of the cliff ( its 10 euros a person and only goes halfway up but a great experience in my opinion). You then have to walk the rest of the way up into the village. After watching the sunset in IA (it truly is the most beautiful sunset you will ever see. Try to watch it from the castle ruins, if you're not into battling tourists for a spot at the ruins, drinking a nice glass of wine at an openair rooftop restaurant while watching the sun go down it also incredibly beautiful not to mention romantic ;) From there the travel company we booked with organized a bus back to Thira. I would recommend waiting until the last minute to get on the bus as it seems all buses in Greece have no AC and the windows never open. Enjoy Greece and fall in love with Santorini... We did!
This is the must place to visit in Santorini after Oia sunset point. The ferry takes you the island and complete expereince is thriling. There not much to see their so dont waste time to see the volcano instead try to capture the Santorini island. The best part is visit to the hot springs. If you know swimming pls dont miss change to jump into the agean sea and swim. its a life long experience.
We were to Santorini on a day trip (fast boat + bus and guide) from Kreta. Just a glimpse, really, but the island is a gem! The history of the historical eruption - the origin of the Atlantis legend, many think - is amazing. It's been the most powerful eruption ever seen by mankind. Zillions of tons of rock vaporised in orbit... you'll hear all about it (or simply google it). The caldera - or the ring of islets surrounding it - is about 60 km wide IIRC. Think of all that going up! But especially, enjoy the sight.
You are delivered to a small port where you exit a boat and begin the climb. History of the eruptions is interesting. Being on an active volcano and observing the gas exiting is not something you normally do. The views of Santorini, surrounding islands and the channel are quite picturesque. If you're not in it for the excercise, this a potential attraction to pass and invest your time elsewhere.
One-day trip to the most famous island in Greece from Heraklion. Very comfortable travelling with MegaJets, long but comfortable. Life-time visit
We hiked in 100 degree heat to what I thought was an active volcano with lava flowing turned out to be nothing more than steam and sulphur smell. The view from the top was worth the hike up though. We could see the Aegean Sea with our boat and others below. Later on the tour, we swam in the volcanic warm pools of the Aegean Sea. This was exciting and adventurous. The boat does not get very close to the pools because of large boulders under water. They say you must be a good swimmer to swim to the warm pools.....no life jackets or floaties! It was fun jumping into the ice cold Aegean and swimming 100 yards or more to the warm pools. We were allowed 15 minutes there and then swam back to the boat. FUN
From what I read it's not worth the trip to see the volcano itself . Nothing to see really it's not active . To be able to say I have visited a volcano ok but there are much better hours to spend than seeing tbe volcano . Go to Oia and spend at keast a day exploring the city .
Walked all around the volcanic island. Even experienced the steam vents and 3 members of our boat tour group swam in the warm springs.
My first time visiting an Active Volcano. Way co seeing the steam coming out of the rock and smell of sulphur. It's a 30 mins walk to the crater.
From Fira, this place presents as a beautiful uninhabited island. We stayed in Villa Fontini hotel and after around 30 minutes picturesque walk reached the Cable car boarding point. Cable car takes less than 10 minutes to drop you down from a high hill to boarding point for boats/cruise. Charges are around 15 Euros per adult to take to Volcano island. Travel is around 30 minutes and as the boat goes towards the island - the things that you will see are ink dark blue sea (I have never seen such a dark blue color water), mountains at your back with Fira/Oia islands white color buildings which look like a cream above the mountain and you also see standing large cruise ships on the way. You then get into the island .. few places show how hard the explosions will be as Earth has throw up huge rock boulders in different colors. There is a ticket for around 2 Euros to get into the island. It will be a 30 minutes rough walk on an uneven rocky terrain to reach the center where you can sense smell of sulphur and also smoke. Walk back to the boat which takes you to a hot spring. Water around this area is Green in color. Those who are good in swimming jumps the boat into the sea to swim to the hot spring. That is an amazing experience. Return back to the pier after a full 2 1/2 hours. Santorini island itself is atleast 10 degrees temperature more than the mainland/Athens with abundant sunshine and spectacular views in all directions.
This sight is just something magical. It's got this effect on you. I visited Santorini in June 2013 and that was my first visit to Greece. I was stunned by the sight of the volcano in the middle of the sea. What a beautiful city.
Do not forget some good shoes. I know that you're in the vacation but the rock is hard, hot and it will hurt you even if you have swimming shoes. The trip is great.
if you like geology or hiking on a big rock with nothing around it , you should go , its pricy and its a group tour which means that you will have to wait for people who are out of shape , childrens , elderly people all the time ... the best part of the tour was the sailing to go there and back
