The Dom or Aachen Cathedral is the focal point for tourist activities in this town of engineering repute. We visited the Dom for free and it was a pleasant experience despite the large groups who were there at the same time. The building over contained the treasury where we paid €4 as students to take a look inside. There were a few interesting pieces like a giant gold hand and a large sparkly diamond but despite our scaled expectations (not like we were thinking it'd be Smaug's hoard) we were a bit disappointed by something that was well recommended. Throughout the rest of our Europe trip we saw much more impressive arrays of art and treasures that are worth your time at places including the Rijks museum in AMS, Green Vault in Dresden, and Prague Palace.
Allow yourself time to view the many historic items contained with-in this treasure trove of history. The overall presentations of these historic items are well worth your efforts.
If facing the front of Aachen Cathedral by the gates (standing outside), the Treasury is a dozen or so meters to your left. Tickets can be purchased just opposite in the information building. I entered around 10AM on a Saturday and it was less than a dozen people inside. This made for a very peaceful and enjoyable experience. English audio guide was 3 euros and is a must (nothing is in English). Some amazing relics inside. Spent around an hour and half inside. Highly recommended.
This is a small modern building right across from the Cathedral. I fee is required, but worth it, This museum is especially interesting for those interested in Charlemagne and church history. They also have a big collection of reliquaries. Many of the items looked as new as the day they were made. I especially liked the Charlemagne bust in gold.Audio guide is not included, but it is interesting and describes the pieces well. As most of information is not translated, it helps. English is used through out the exhibit.Be aware that on Mondays it is only opened until 1 pm.All these fine German cities have wonderful christkindlmarkt in december, and Aachen's is in the square right in front of this museum.
One of the watch people gave me an impromptu explanation of a cross from the year 1000, very interesting. You can take photos as long as you don't use flash, but the museum glass they use allows for very lovely photo taking. Be sure to go upstairs and see the exhibition of locks. Stunning collections!
I was so grateful I decided to visit this museum. Not necessarily a large place but every piece was world-class treasure, from all the Charlemagne relics to other pieces. Simply amazing! You won't regret this!
You can really comprehend that you see the historical items which are 500-900 years old! Like crowning dress and so rest! Amazing!
It was closed when we arrived so we didnt have a chance to go inside but it was a pretty sight to go around at night.
It's a beautiful and old cathedral which is embedded into the old town of Aachen. During the advent time it's setting for the Christmas market.
Last time I was in Aachen I missed this place, but this time I made sure to visit and it was worth. There are several religious artifacts of historical importance and religious relevance. Audio guide is not included, but it is interesting and describes the pieces well. As most of information is not translated, it helps.Be aware that on mondays it is only opened until 1 pm.
This museum is especially interesting for those interested in Charlemagne and church history. They also have a big collection of reliquaries.
Not the largest museum in the world, however, well worth a visit to check out some of the breathtakingly gorgeous treasures and icons.
The items here were well displayed and the English description informative. An audio guide may be hired, but we didn't bother.I especially liked the coronation cope, and Charlemagne bust in gold.
I thought the treasure was gorgeous. I disliked the fact you were not suppose to take photos but most people were doing so.
Although the Treasury is a small museum the standard of the exhibits and their presentation is high. Definitely worth visiting
