Great place to go and see the whole of Passau .Fantastic view.Nice to sit outside as well.the service and the food could be better.there isn't always such a good choice, and sometimes the staff are not the friendliest .But worth going just for the view
You should go up with no doubt to see the views!! and to the panorama tour really worth it!!! (just costs 1€) BUTdon't think about going to Oberhaus Cafe. They had NOTHING of what's in the menu, the coffee was really bad. They didn't even have water!!!!! avoid it
The museum was a bit of a disappointment for us. We loved the views but the museum itself was rather dull. Not worth the cost. Sorry!By the way, if you take the bust up to the Oberhaus, you can get a discount on the museum tour. However, you have to ask. They did not give us the discount until we asked, even though they saw us go up on the bus,
The museum is organized topically. The sections on the the Romans and the salt trade were my favorites.
This museum was more than expected! We ran out of time and missed out on some areas we wanted to visit. Plan on at least a full morning to see everything!
We were on a Viking River Cruise that was docked just over the bridge from the walk and stairs to Oberhaus. It was a nice walk that is not overly strenuous although we were warned that it was the walk was worth the views and along the way and from the top. You can explore the building we were there on a warm December day, it was beautiful time of year. The shuttle bus does stop running in November. We walked down at sunset which was an added bonus.
Caught the shuttle bus up and back to save our senior legs for walking the museum. Worth doing so if you are a foot sore tourist. My husband has quite a short attention span for museums but I noticed this one kept him quite interested so that is a good measure of its worth. I also enjoyed it and learned a lot about the town and surrounding areas.
Our river cruise ship was docked across the river from this museum and we had an extra day to explore more of Passau. We decided to walk across the bridge and climb the stairs and walkways to the top. This worked fine and was not as strenuous as some had intimated. You can also take a van from the Rathaus to the museum. We were rewarded with a wonderful historical museum and views. We spent at least 2 hours in the museum and still didn't have the energy to see everything. Most items are only labelled in German, but the historical background of the exhibits were also in English. We later had lunch in the restaurant overlooking the city which was a pleasant way to spend time before our walk back down.
The Oberhaus museum provides an informative overview of the town of Passau and surrounds since before the Romans. The displays are often innovative and unusual.Unfortunately not many of the captions are in anything but German, so it is not always easy to follow the narrative. The views from ramparts over the city of Passau and the villages of Innstadt and Ilzstadt and of course of the three rivers are stunning. To get there take the shuttle bus in front of the town hall (the Rathaus) on the banks of the Danube (Donau). It was 5.5 euros for a return ticket for a family - it apparently was also 5.5 euros for an individual. Keep you bus ticket as you will need it if you are going to take the shuttle back, but also because you will get a 1 euro discount on your ticket into the museum if you have to buy one.
In the center of town at the waters edge is a special shuttle stop with a sign for the museum. We took the shuttle bus up and back (leaves every 30 minutes from top and bottom - half hour from top, quarter hour from bottom), one way is 3 Euro and the museum entrance fee is 5 Euro but if you bought the ticket and the roundtrip bus fare together on the shuttle then it was 8 Euro total. The view alone is worth the trip because you see the 3 rivers and where they meet. Lot's of interesting stuff in the museum, you could race through or linger and read more about the history of the area.
I loved the exhibits, esp of Leopold and the widow Medici. He gave up his power to marry her and she brought art, architecture and music to Passau. Passau has a complicated and fascinating history and you can learn more from going yourself. Also, a local artist has his stone and bronze sculptures on permanent display there.
We traveled by train to Passau using Bayern-Ticket as a day trip from Munich. We like to have a panorama view of Passau and the bus ride from old town hall to here just take a few minutes. We'd been to the view tower and are able to catch the next bus back to town within about an hour. Besides, the bus ride is free with a Bayern-Ticket.
If you are in decent condition I would suggest the walk up to the top and walking back down. The museum takes you through a long time period and appeals do those interested in a deep dive in history. It costs about 5 Euro to get in. If you are just interested in a view from the top, you can skip the museum and hike further up the hill and for 1 Euro go to the top of a tower and get a wonderful view of the 3 rivers merging.
