这是位于旧城北部的大教堂,两种建筑方式结合在一起,红砖做的部分为罗曼式,白墙红屋顶的部分为歌特式。门周围的雕塑很精致,里面装饰得不算豪华,但彩色玻璃很不错。

It is absolutely one of the most beautiful cathedrals I've ever seen. With all of the breathtaking interior structure and design.

The Cathedral of Augsburg (Dom Unserer Lieben Frau) is considered the oldest church in Augsburg. The early documents suggested there was already a church of some kind. The current appearance was from 11th century, originally built Romanesque style. The later additions to the structure are in Gothic style. One can see from outside the two Gothic towers and the copper spires are clearly the later additions. Another interest thing to point out is the interior work of the church did not follow chronological orders. It was in Baroque and later changed to Medieval looks. The white nave painted with bricks outlines is a Romanesque style with a ribbed Gothic vault. But the most important elements in the Cathedral are the five stained glass windows in the south clerestory. Since Cathedral was spared from heavy war damages these stained glass windows, believed to be the oldest in the world, were preserved. There are five stained glass windows with portraits of the prophets Jonah, Daniel, Hosea, Moses and David from late 11th or early 12th century. The portraits are Romanesque style and had been restored overtime. Each prophet holds a scroll with a Latin inscription and wears medieval knights' pointed footwear. The original Romanesque bronze doors in south portal were removed, now in Augsburg's Diocesan Museum, and replaced with modern bronze doors by Max Faller. I am not a fan of old and new arts co-exist and not sure putting the modern bronze doors in a traditional Catholic church is a good choice. But I visited the Cathedral mainly to see the stained glass windows. My mission was completed.

As others have said, this church has the oldest pictorial stained glass windows in the world. Surprisingly, they look very modern, but they are beautiful. The other stained glass windows in the church were beautiful as well. The church was easy to find and we spent about a half hour there. From the church, it is an easy walk to the center of town. We were there at Christmas Market time, and found the markets to be very nice. On certain days, they out on a display/show from the city building with angels appearing in several windows. It was a very nice experience.

Augsburg Dom has five stained glass windows which are the oldest in the world. It is hard to believe as the windows look so modern! The hat on one saint is positively space age. There are some great painted altar pieces and an ancient carved stone throne. The treasury is excellent.

Maybe we’ve just seen one church too many on our travels or are spoiled by living in a city with a world-famous cathedral, but we were disappointed by the plain interior and the stained glass, which we had expected would be far more impressive. We had a hard time finding an entrance – the church seemed to have been put together in an architecturally haphazard way and as we later read was indeed changed again and again. We wandered around a bit, was able to overhear some interesting details about the destruction of the place during World War II, but after a look at the cloister, left to continue our visit in Augsburg. Maybe we should’ve tried to join a tour of the cathedral or maybe we should’ve just skipped both the church and this overrated mid-size Bavarian city altogether.

Arguably one of the main highlights of Augsburg. You can also see some Roman ruins on display and the decoration on the stained glass windows look quite phenomenal.

No, this is not the Cologne cathedral or Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain, in other words a must-see, but it would be foolish while in Augsburg not to visit this building and also the Jewish Synagogue at the other end of downtown. Both are reasonably good representatives of religious beauty and commitment.

garden grounds outside had stunning roses and statues to photograph. I didn't make it inside the church but really enjoyed the grounds.

Many cathedrals you see in Europe are similar and it is easy to stop appreciating the beauty of the architecture and space when you have seen so many, but this one, dating from the 10th century, had some unique features. In particular, the stained glass, dating from the 11th century, is the oldest in Germany, and some experts say the world as well. Most ancient cathedrals I have seen have been restored or repaired so much that they no longer keep that feel or aura of their age, but this one was dripping with history- from the mausoleum with worn headstones and plaques, to the peeling fresco paintings revealing even older paintings beneath them. Bonus- it's free to go in!

This is the church I grew up in with my Grandmother who still resides in a suburb of Augsburg. The stained glass is so beautiful, the entryway with the intricate arch works is outstanding. This church was built atop Roman ruins which remain onsite and can be seen, touched and read about on their informational charts. You can also see the cript below the church. I visit it each time I'm home in Augsburg and was able to bring my husband and daughter there to see it after having describing it to them. I highly recommend a visit to this church.

The Augsburg main cathedral is not as fancy as in Ulm of Köln, but nonetheless it shows more than 500 building history and its core is one of the oldest large cathedrals in Germany. The east side is finest Gothic while parts of the west remain Roman style. See the crypt build with Roman remains.

We only had an hour or so to visit this beautiful cathedral. Plan on at least two hours to get the full experience. It was incredible.

I am not the religious kind, but I always go inside when I pass it by. It's just so huge and impressive and seems to hold so many historical stories in its niches and the refurbished crypt. Have a close look at the windows and the wooden front door from the outside, they are a treasure! My kids love the Dom as it's a bit creepy but has lots of things to discover. And when you go outside, the kids will love the remains of the old Roman housing next to the dome. Mine prefer to run and jump on the walls (instead of playing on the nearby playground) and to pretend they are living in old times...
