We visited this salt mine in July 2014 with our boys aged 13 and 10 years. Both we and our kids found it a really interesting and great value for money. First you go down 200 metres in the miners' lift and emerge into a maze of tunnels and caverns carved out of the rock. You walk through a series of huge caverns, each approximately 20 metres high, 30 metres wide and 500 metres long (yes, really that big!). There are top quality displays, films and exhibitions about the geological processes that formed the salt deposits, the fossils they've found there, the mining process and what salt is used for. Everyone succumbs to the temptation to taste the walls, and they really are just salt! There is a sensitive exhibition of the use the salt mine was put to during WW2 when it became an aircraft engine factory staffed by slave labourers. There are displays of salt-mining equipment past and present and you even get to pretend to set off a blasting explosion in a sound-and-light show that our kids loved. There are also some amazing carved frescos that the miners made and even a laser show in the semi-darkness that has to be seen to be believed. We spent around 2 hours underground and we could have easily spent longer. Don't worry about the cold, unlike caves, the salt caverns are comfortably warm at around 18 degrees Centigrade. Once back on the surface we had a very pleasant currywurst in the garden cafe at the entrance to the site. Genuinely one of the highlights of our holiday.
