Always stunning to see this big gotic church in this small town. It is worth to stop and have a look inside the town and the church, potentially with a snack in one of the many coffee shops around.
Situated in a nice, peaceful town in the Black Forest. The cathedral is beautiful inside, all white and peaceful, with prayer rooms to the side. It is free to enter, but it is requested that you respect the silence of the church, which everyone did while I was there. There are many areas to explore inside the cathedral. Candles and booklets are available to purchase. It was a very peaceful experience and I visit every time I am in the area.
Stopping in Sankt Blasien turned out to be a real surpriseThere was a small market in front of the DOMThe building on the outside showed nothing of what is insideWhite, clean, majestic and in some ways a bit overwhelming
The building is very impressive, and the white marble give a very positive impression, contrasting with the always dark ambiance of other cathedrals.
Stunning church with a massive round domed roof, just slightly wider than St Pauls. It has been beautifully restored and has an amazing tranquil atmosphere with light streaming in through the windows. Well worth a visit
wonderfull church, great place to walk around a bit, very peacefull church, nice and white all over. great backerei across from the square, and also take a look in the gardens surrounding the Dom.
Dull and gloomy from the outside my wife looked in and came out telling me to prepare for a shock. It is a shame to spoil the surprise but other reviewers have given it away. Think Zara's wedding on a grand scale, i.e. the iside is all dazzling white (Including seating etc) apart from the ceiling painting in the huge dome.Walk round the corner to the right and the front of the older abbey buildings remain .
Surpring to find such an impressive and imposing building in a small town tucked away in the Black Forest. The original Abbey was destroyed by fire in the late 18th Century and the Domed building which now stands here was rebuilt in the Baroque style. Worth a visit. Free entry. Can't miss it, right in the centre of town, riverside location. Nice cafes too. See website for concerts and events.
As someone has already written, you simply would not expect to find a Basilica having such dimensions in a town over the mounain. If from the outside of the cathedral you get speechless, once you go inside you get breathless. It is simply marvellous, so white and with huge columns white as well. If you go by car, you can find free parkings (max 2 hours from Mon.-Fr.) in the Umgehungstrasse, just before the supermarket.
The dome is breathtaking ! We have seen St. Peter in the Vatikan & the duomo in Florence & we must say that this one is worth visiting as well. It's very bright inside as the light is flowing through the big windows and reflects inside on the all white (eithe painted white or white stone) walls/ceilings.
First of all, St. Blasien is a beautiful town. You should start your walk there through the wonderful garden underused with a well decorated housed. From there go to this marvelous Basilica all in white with great acoustics. Right in front of the Basilica there is a great restaurant located in the Dom-Hotel you won't regret it.
Out of nowhere the dome of St Blasien rises into the sky as you drive around lake Schulchsee rises this huge dome that dominates the village.Inside the notices are clear but unobtrusive instructing you to retain the silent peacefulness of the building. Looking up one sees a ceiling fresco that beautifully illustrates the passing from this life to the next.Around the edge of the circular worship area are various altars to various saints - striking is St Nicklaus's altar - this saint is obviously important in the black forest as the parish church in Schulchsee is also dedicated to him. There is a quiet chapel at the entrance for private prayers and devotions and many candles burnt as a witness to the number who find themselves drawn close to God in this place.
What would you least expect in the wooded landscape of the black forrest is a huge basilica with an enormous Dome. As a childhood memory it was dark, black and hidden behind the woods. When I came back now, 50 plus years later, I found it amidst a wonderful sundrenched valley next to a small stream with sparkling clear water and the inside was airy and light. Perfect to visit any time of the year
Just a very reflective basilica, nice place to rest and meditate after many walks!
Beautiful town with lovely coffee shops and great atmospheregreat stop for ice cream and coffee
