This is a really beautiful little zoo. There is not a huge selection of animals here but what they do have is displayed very well and look like they are in great condition. The only enclosure which was not so good was the bear and fox enclosure (what an amazing mix of animals) which was very small – but they are expanding it to almost 4 times its current size (will be back to see it when it is finished for sure). Other stand out areas are the sloths (they had a very cute baby and are allowed to go outside which is great to see), great ape house which has Orangutans, Gorillas and Chimpanzees (with some very handsome animals), the Rhesus Macaque enclosure and for some reason the duck pond in one of the walk through aviaries struck me as really beautiful! All in all it is a really nice cozy collection set in an area which is planted and decorated really nicely. If you are in the area I would highly recommend it!
Dissapointed because very small, a few animals for this expensive price. Other zoo cost the same price with more animals
I have been to zoos that make you walk a million miles before you see one animal and then another to see the next one. Heidelberg zoo is different in that way. The animal stall start quite early and they are separated by short distances. This way you don't feel too tired or overwhelmed. The animals all looked well cared for and we enjoyed watching the feeding times. The zoo is clean, well´maintained, and has several eating options, rest rooms and resting spaces. The zoo shop is worth a visit though I did not find anything really unique.
Very nice place to stay all day with friends or family. You interact directly with some animals, and for children I think this is very educative also.
i have taken my son here when i live in heidelberg, the animal are their but they all look like they want to commit suicide....its depressing in here
The prices are too high for this venue. Families in Heidelberg need activities for their kiddos to experience. It would be more user-friendly if the prices came down significantly. It is well kept, they have a newer parking garage, and the park has an excellent playground for children. The welcome service should take a few courses in customer service, ie. greeting and looking patrons in the eye as they purchase overpriced tickets.
suggest suggest suggest,we spent a family day there, everything is clean, all the animal cages well organized. We were there just on feeding time- what a nice attraction. If you are with kids- fun day guaranteed.
Why not! It is interesting if you have kids. But only if you have time. This place is enchanting and you should really explore its streets, castle and take a walk by the river and then if you have time to incorporate attractions like this.
Couldn't believe they managed to pack so much into this small space. The creators have really put some thought into minimising wasted space and in several enclosures more than one type of animal share the space - meercats in with skunks for example. We spent a thoroughly enjoyable few hours here. Wouldn't like to drive there on a busy day though - walk along the river bank from the old town instead.
There is a bus to the zoo and we should have used it but decided to walk from our hotel near the rail station. The zoo is compact and very nice with the usual selection of animals/birds, plenty of play areas for children so all in all a nice compact zoo, which can be done in 2 to 3 hours.
A great selection of animals and activities. Well worth a visit for all the family. We even got to see the lions fed and the otters.
I've been to many zoos. I visit every zoo in every city I travel too. I even used to work at a zoo. This zoo was just impressive. An amazingly diverse collection of animals, and gorgeous exhibits. They even had animals I had never seen before! I was sorely impressed. I cannot emphasize enough that everyone must visit this zoo. It's not even that big! I personally take a very long time in zoos, but you could probably finish seeing everything in two hours.
Recently we stayed at Heidelberg Youth Hostel (highly recommended) and decided to visit our neighbours, the zoo. Having visited some excellent zoos in the past: the Burger Zoo in Arnhem, Whipsnade in England, I was apprehensive about Heidelberg but soon pleasantly surprised. Admittedly it is relatively compact and one or two enclosures aren't wholly modern but overall it is an excellent place. The animal range is very good and I was especially pleased to see the effort that had been made in planning the tiger and elephant houses/enclosures. The children enjoyed our day there: Germany plans children's play areas and attractions so imaginatively and I would recommend the zoo without hesitation.
The tiger exhibit was cool, you were able to see the tigers up close. Meir cats, bears, and lions. The flamingo habitat is full of ducks and we fed them from the food dispenser (25 cent euro for a handful from a small machine) and the fish in the habitat came up in droves when the pellets hit the water. Don't forget to look up to see many many storks in the trees above. There were 3 elephants and a round monkey room. There was a baby gorilla and many other chimps. Give yourself 3 hours at least to see everything.
This zoo is very easy to reach by bicycle (from Heidelberg's centre), bus (from anywhere around or in Heidelberg) or car and has a good mix between a few local and many exotic animals. There are many small-sized and a few larger attractions, and everywhere is the pedagogical approach also given. It's perfect for children, who are not teenagers yet, because of its middle-sized area and the short distances between the attractions, which are not too large. Unfortunately, there are only few and small picnic areas and there are only few covered places, so on a rainy or very sunny day, it can be difficult to "hide" somewhere.
