Although it was a bit difficult to find (unfortunately the stairs leading up to it were under reconstruction), it was worth the effort- the view is amazing. Definitely should have not worn brand new shoes though, it was pretty muddy! There are lots of other paths, and towers to climb - it's a national park- so it's entirely up to you how long you make the trip. Definitely a great start to the day!

Brilliant place for a walk so put on those walking shoes and take in the laneways along the way. A great way to finish off a trip to the castle and up the top of the mountain. Quite a few cafes and restaurants along this street so just take a note which ones the tour groups are going into and miss those. The restaurants and cafes are all trying to get your to come in so the prices are good even in winter. The laneways are very specials as they can contains some quirky little shops. Wheelchairs are OK along this street but if you have little ones you might like to use a pram as the groups of people even in winter can sometimes be great. We love travelling in winter as we feel the snow and ice just add another dimension to a wonderful place, but of course, we don't get snow where we come from so the time of year is up to you.

I am a runner and love trail running. The trails are endless and provide great views back to Heidelberg. The start is steep but once you are over that the run is fantastic. Back to nature but a view to a beautiful town. Well worth it. I'm winter wear a thermal top.

Heidelberg was the last city of our 20 day tour. By the time we arrived, we were tired. It was a rainy day. The students on tour were homesick. It was a Sunday and not much was open for business in the city. I suggested we walk the Philosophers' Way. We had an amazing time! I couldn't believe how much belly-aching I heard before the walk, but heard laughter during and after. I think they had a greater appreciation for the city after that.

Having lived in Heidelberg for thirteen years this has got to be my favorite afternoon activity. Meandering the trail, watching fellow walkers and enjoying the breathtaking view!

The view from the top is amazing! There is no place better to get a good picture of Heidelberg and the castle. We took the winding path up the side called "the snakes path" by locals. This is a vey steep climb but it does have steps and overlooks on the way. If it has rained recently, the leaves are rather slippery so use the handrails. It's also a good idea to bring a bottle of water along for your hike. We decided to get up really early and see the sun rise behind the castle. In theory this was brilliant, in actuality, the sun rose behind the mountain and the city and castle were cast in shadows in November. Perhaps at a different time of year this would work. We did get some amazing photos of the fog lifting off the river though.

Philosophenweg is located in Neuenheim area of Heidelberg. Famous for its great view of the Castle, it is occupied by the elite class of the city. It can be reached by slight terrain walking and worth a trip for some great view and click of the castle.

steep climb or descend from the old bridge. The view is unbeatable. Must wear sport shoe before attempting this.
