While at Heidelberg Castle you must see the Apothecary Museum. This will take you way back in time and explain some of the myths that surround religion and medicine in the Medieval times. This site is larger than it looks from the outside, so give yourself enough time to soak it all in. If you are interested in medicine and health you will doubly enjoy this, if that is not your interest, you can just whip through. We didn't leave enough time for this medieval adventure & I still regret it. I did take a lot of photographs, so I relived the site and gathered more information from the Internet to accompany my many pictures. Exhibits are described in German and English so that helped a lot. I take pictures of the descriptions accompanying the exhibits, then blow them up on the computer so I can title and describe my pictures. Helps me relive every trip many times. There is not a separate fee for this sight, it is included in the ticket for the castle.
My 6 year old enjoyed learning about (potions) medicine. It is a free stop in sort of place, maybe 5-25 minutes depending on your interest. I did buy a few items in the gift shop that had pretty reasonable prices for incense and oil burners.
Small but free. If you're up in the castle complex anyway you may as well pop in to look at the exhibits from Germany's history.
We took some time going through the museum because it was recommended by our Hotel. I was not very impressed, good but worth a lot of time.
This is a pretty cool museum within the ruins of Heidelberg Castle. Heidelberg Castle is the main attraction and a must-see for any visitor to Heidelberg. The views from the top are outstanding. We went in December and there was a fabulous Christmas Market on the castle grounds.
If you ever wondered about drugs, treatments, healing plants, etc., that people used in the middle ages, this is the place for you. Impressive displays (some are full-sized rooms) showing what an apothecary looked like, plants and animal-parts used, process of making healing substances, etc. Ask for the audio tour player.
This museum is within the Heidelberg castle and entry is included in the ticket for the castle. Whilst much of the information is not in english, there are a series of excellent displays and that information that is accessible in english is very interesting.
A visit to Heidelberg Castle is a must while visiting this charming town but while there you will chance upon a must unusual museum. I almost missed it when there and am so glad I didn't. It's a most impressive and well designed museum beautifully portraying the history and early days of medicines as they were prepared and stored in the pharmacies in earlier days. I found it a most fascinating and enlightening experience. The standard of presentation was quite stunning even if pills and potions are not your thing. Highly recommended when visiting the Castle.
This museum is much bigger than it appears from the outside. If you visit the castle, it is a great way to spend a half hour or so inside warming up while you look at some interesting displays.
Small and interesting. May be a destination for those in the industry for sure. Good displays. Well thought out.
When visiting Heidelberg Castle (Schloss Heidelberg) don't miss the unique opportunitiy of getting into the German Pharmacy Museum. There you can enjoy great athmosphere and experience a journey through the history of medical science, especially focused on the development of pharmacology with over 20 Tsd. objects on display.
It is a very cool place to see. Especially, (if you have time) read the very interesting history of pharmacy at the entrance room. Then, you will appreciate the museum even more.
A museum that tells the history of medicine. Most of the subtitles are also offered in English language. The medicine bowls are nice to look at, also the various instruments to prepare medicine. I like the room where people can open some cans and get a smell of the herb tea. The Aspirin advertisements in anime are also interesting.
This museum on the grounds of Heidelberg Castle was an unexpected side note to our visit to the castle grounds. Very interesting history and artifacts surrounding the beginnings and evolution of apothecary & pharmaceutical discoveries and practices.
