We came upon this structure early in the morning so could not go in, but it was our introduction to the old town of Koblenz, and it was strikingly attractive and a welcoming landmark. This is a great little area and beyond this building it's for strolling if you have a little time.
This is a place I have heard about since I was a little girl, how romantic it was, beautiful and many other things, and in many ways it is, but when you have been to many German towns and cities as I have, the Alte Burg although it is nice, is not as nice as others. I don't want to mislead you; maybe I had imagined something else. For me it was prettier the Castle and fortresses along the Rihine.
You will likely walk around the city. It is a very easy walk; just wear comfortable shoes. Thus you will likely come upon this structure which is worth a quick look. It is located on the Mosel river side.
We didn't go inside this and had passed it once before without really noticing it! It does have some history and a pretty little courtyard.
note that you have to walk uphill and down to get to the castle. The person on the entrance tell that it is 800 mts, but is amost 1100 and up and down hill. There is a shuttle bus that costs 4 euros. There is a nice restaurant on the castle and tours in english.
Former 13th century electoral water castle and was enclosed by a wide moat and Curtain wall. On the remains of a Roman round tower a Romanesque residential tower was built by family von Arken. Archbishop Heinrich II von Finstigen had it 1277 expanded as outer bailey, the Lombard band at the second floor is its original height. Under Archbishop Otto von Ziegenhain the Eastern Tower arose, the octagonal storey served as ribvaulted Chapel. Otto ordered the build of the connection from the former city bridge gate with the originally free-standing west tower. Under archbishops Johann VI von der Leyen and Johann VIII von Orsbeck extensions and conversion took place. Damaged during the invasion of the French revolutionary troops in 1688 and 1794. Under French rule a tinware factory moved in the building in 1806 which was closed down in 1897, then the Castle was sold to the city of Koblenz, in 1938 used by the control of the Hitler Youth. Only minor damage during WW II, completely restored in 1960-1962. Since 2002 it is listed as UNESCO World Heritage, currently it houses the Koblenz city archive.
Wir hatten am 2. Weihnachtsfeiertag reservier.
