You should consider visiting this church on a sunny day, sun shining through the colourful Chagall painted windows gives a breathtaking view!
We popped in during our free time at the Mainz Old Town. It's a nice high ceiling church, plain ceiling but with paintings on the walls and Chagall stained glass windows, and a nice long aisle.
Well, here it is all about the windows. The atmosphere they create in the church is magnificent. But do not overlook the beautiful cloister.
The Chagall windows are well worth the visit. Different than any church windows you will see in Europe. Be sure to sit for awhile and watch the light change. A short walk from the center square in the older section of Mainz.
Unassuming cathedral that is definitely worth the visit. Interesting architecture and stained glass windows. Very peaceful.
This is a beautiful church with stunning windows and charming presence. There are lots of churches in Europe but this one is definitely worth a visit.
Be certain to read the history of the Chagall windows. It is quite poignant. It is a bit of a "hike" to get there but well worth the effort.
Amazing Marc Chagall windows. Make sure to bring a pair of binoculars so you can really enjoy the detail.
The Chagall windows are stunning, and the new organ is gorgeous. I went twice, once in the morning to enjoy the windows, and saw an ad for an organ conert on Sunday night. I returned for the concert and had the pleasure of watching the light fade from those lovely windows while listening to great music.
The Chagall windows are really fabulous and the building itself with its cloisters is very interesting as well. Besides, the surrounding area is nice to walk around offering beautiful views .over the city
I had read about the Chagall windows in this church and wanted to see them. The church is open from 10 am to 5 pm. I happened to go one weekday morning about 10:30 and the organist was practicing, so that was the highlight. There was a lot of information in the church, but it was all in German, so I couldn't even tell which windows were the Chagall ones. I ended up buying a book in English for 4 euros that told me about the windows. The Chagall windows are 5 in number and are at the very front of the church. overlooking the altar. They depict various scenes from the Bible and contain a brilliant blue color. The other windows in the church (on the sides and back) are complementary but were not done by Chagall.
The church has famous stained glass, however recently it has had a new organ by Klais installed The organ case has to be seen!!! The pipes look as if they have somehow grown into a random vertical display like shiny metallic stalactites and stalagmites. Very interesting. Never seen anything like it! However for my taste the organ sounded good although a bit loud.
Another beautiful church building to look at while in the midst of some outstanding architecture wherever you look. Europe is just full of these types of buildings. It just makes you think of how they can be designed and built so many years ago without the technology we have today. Well worth the stop if this is the type of architecture that interests you.
I really liked this church, the blue light coming in through the stain glass is really, really pretty. It almost felt too nice, too refurbished, too new. Not nearly as big as the Mainz Dom, this church is pretty, but if I had to choose between the two churches, I would go with Mainz Dom.
