When you want to get to the top of Citta Alta in Bergamo without any effort this attraction is for you! All you need to have is a valid ticket and within few minutes you can admire wonderful views from the top of the hill.
We went on a day trip to Bergamo from Milan via train and on arrival was looking for the Tourist Information Centre to get details on how to get to Citta Alta. We found the info center at the back of McDonalds (easily seen as you exit the train station) and the woman manning the centre gave the information in a robotic,'couldn't care less', almost dismissive fashion (she really shouldn't be working in a tourist info office). We followed the map, walking about 15 minutes to the Funicolare, bought the single trip 1.50 Euro tickets and lined up. The funicular was small and we were packed. Not much to see unless you were lucky enough to be in the front but as the nice old Italian lady informed us, it will just take two minutes to reach the top. Once at the top, you can easily spend a few hours walking through the old city. As it was a beautiful winter day, we decided to walk downhill rather than take the same funicular again.
We got the public bus from down the city up to infront of the funicolare . We got on it with the same ticket, so it's worth for the price. Only 1.50 euros for 75 minutes. There's a breath taking view from up there. But then it's nice to walk down the city by walk.
It is an old small train going to the upper city. There is a space for about 25 - 30 people whose can get up within 5 minutes. Similar train is in the centre of Budapest.
We enjoyed using the funicolare to get fro the bottom level of the town to the upper level. Our son who was 8 at the time found it especially amusing. The top part of the town is lovely the further you explore. Some lovely Italian restaurants too.
Unlike other funicular, transparent roofs let you admire the view. More than this, an expensive short ride. Don't spend money on the way back, just walk down the city.
Very nice vintage style new machinery. Beautiful view from the top. Use it to get to the top & walk back down you'll enjoy it on a sunny day.
Great trip up to the old town of Bergamo with excellent views of the "new" town below. Anyone flying into Milan Bergamo Airport - it's well worth spending an afternoon/evening or night in this old town. There is more to Bergamo than just the airport.
I have taken this during the only pause in in a 10 days rain spree, in early November, around early afternoon with the sun illuminating the clear sky and an incredible view of the plane all the way to Milan. This is probably the thousandth time I do it in my life but every time it is a different and a new experience.
Do not miss a trip on Funicolare (rail cable car) to go uphill in Citta' alta. It's a nice way to shift from modern town in the ancient one, Travel 500 years back in 5 minutes...
This is the recommendable way of get to the Citta Alta, especially for those who are not used to funiculars. You will get a taste of occupied areas of the old city in the fully packed wagons. The sceneries from the funicular are excellent and in order to get good pictures you should be able to get to the wagon among the first ones.
Go up I. The evening as well last trip is midnight and the guys look out for passengers to get everyone back to the bassa
Nice short ride, good and fast way to get to old part of town. If you like to safe some money on the ticket, buy at ATB Point 24 hour Tourist Ticket for all public transport. This way you can also get to the airport cheaply.
If you need to go in Bergamo Alta and you are a walking tourist, th best choice is the Funicolare. It need very few minutes to bring you on the upper side of the town or back on the lower side. We were 2 persons and paid about 5 euro to go up and back down. It's an interesting experience.
Great experience, lovely views, ideal way to visit the beautiful old town of Bergamo, great opportunities to take some lovely photos.
