The church is very pretty, and it is very enjoyable to be outside of it watching all the houses above in the mountain and also the beach with these contrasting blue from the sea and black from the sand.

As a freelance photographer the scenery was outstanding...the history of this old cathedral was amazing

The Positano Chiesa is renowned for its "black Madonna." Although referred to in history manuals as that, the locals appropriately now refer to it as the Byzantine Madonna. The tiny church and the town has legend and mythology behind it. In Homer’s Odyssey, Positano is the place where the sirens try to lead Ulysses to his death. According to local mythology, the icon had been stolen from Byzantium and was being transported by Saracen pirates when a fierce storm came up. Out of nowhere the frightened sailors heard a voice commanding them to "posa, posa!" ("Put down! Put down!"). They unloaded the icon in the nearest fishing village. Ever since then the village was called Positano in remembrance of the command. The church was built in the 1200s to honor the icon. We got some amazing history of the town by doing a walk from the top of the town down to the sea with a local called Lucy. There are also the remains of a mosaic floor from the original structure in the apse of the church. If you follow the alleys around the back of the church you can also see the medieval crypt which is open at certain times. If you want to see something of historical context in a town really known for its resort style shopping, this tiny jewel is worth a few minutes.

We recently got married here on September 30th!The church was beautiful and the father who married us was the best priest in the world! Our family loved the church also!Cannot wait to visit again in the future with our children hopefully.

My sister got married here last week, and the Church is just beautiful. I would highly recommend coming for Mass or even just a visit.

From an architectural standpoint, the only remarkable part of this church is its tiled dome, which is best viewed and photographed from the beach. The interior is fairly bland, but the main alter-piece is worth study.

We spent something like half an hour in the medieval cript with nicolas who very professionally illustrated us the history the architecture and the secrets of the medieval cript of the church of s.maria assunta. We strongly recommend a visit to anybody wanting to find out something very interesting a cultural attraction finally different than just tanning snorkeling on the beach or drinking and eating at bar and restaurants and all the usually activities one is usually to indulge on when spending time in Positano.

We stumbled upon the crypt by mistake and that was the most worthwhile part if the visit as the guide was very informative and passionate. They are going to put some more of it on display in a few years time. We couldn't see much of the church as it was closed and you could only look through the doors what you could see was very pretty.

This is a beautiful church in Positano. The best way to see the church is from the coastline because the other view is from on the side of the hill and you don't get as "grand" a view. Either way, inside will bring you a sense of awe and a reminder that the builder of old put style and heart into their work. The gold laced throughout the ceiling is stunning. Don't forget to view the "black madonna" .. a one of a kind.

This church sits beautifully in a very beautiful town and like the town seems to be stuck on to the hillside. Inside it is cool and light - almost brilliant - and charming. So it is worth popping in as you meander through the town for a moment or two of quiet.

It is located very close to the beach/harbor. Definitely include a visit to this cathedral in your exploration of Positano. We made a bus ride from Sorrento to Amalfi and stopped in Postitano and we made the steep walk down to the church and back up. The whole town is beautiful and you spend many hours here. Gorgeous views.

My daughter was married in the Santa Maria Assunta in June 2014. The entire experience was every bride's dream. The church is gorgeous, the priest friendly, personable, and cares about the couple he is marrying. His marital counseling before the ceremony was thoughtful and insightful.

You see the dome every where you go in Positano. The inside is very beautiful .Many wedding when we were there ,then they go down to the beach for pictures. The church is small but worth a visit. The church is from the 15th century and has some nice mosaics .

Positano is a wonderful little town but the church Santa Maria Assunta is far to be one of the most impressive. The facade is grey stone made and not very adorned. The dome roof is covered with beautiful coloured tiles-that's the most attractive part I think.Beside the churh is a not very tall rectangular bell tower.

The Positano landscape is mostly recognisable by this great shiny dome of the Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta e Cripta Medievale, it looks picturesque and is the historic landmark in the heart of the Positano. The Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta e Cripta Medievale probably dates back to the 10th century, the church is a typical example of the architecture found in this beautiful area, its interior is classical, white and gold, with a 13th century 'Black Madonna' icon above its altar with crypts below. During restoration works of the square and the crypt, a Roman villa was discovered; still under excavation, it is closed to the public. From the beach you can go up some stairs to the church and the views from the church are great. If you are coming from the main road by Sita bus then you have to walk down the hill for about 10-15 minutes.
